The Missing Subject: Responsibility / Materia care lipsește: Responsabilitatea

What’s a thing you wish schools actually taught?

Almost every discussion about education stops at curriculum — what’s taught, how many hours, which textbook. But anyone who has ever sat in a classroom knows the wound isn’t there. It runs deeper: in the way people — young or grown — refuse to carry the weight of their own actions.

An unprepared teacher is a real problem. But a teacher who gives a low grade to a student who hasn’t learned, and then finds a parent at the principal’s door, shouting, threatening with connections or money — that’s no longer a problem of pedagogy. That’s a problem of the soul. Because the low grade isn’t an insult to the family. It’s a mirror held up to the child. And the parent who shatters the mirror, instead of letting it show what it must show, isn’t protecting the child — he’s protecting his own pride, carried through the child like a shield.

Saint Paul writes: “let each one examine his own work… for each one shall bear his own load” (Galatians 6:4-5). No one can carry the weight of another’s deeds forever — not the teacher for the student, not the parent for the child. Whoever tries to spare another this burden doesn’t help him, he cripples him. He teaches him that guilt is negotiable, that truth can be bought with status or scandal, that responsibility is something thrown elsewhere, not something carried.

And again the Apostle, to parents: “do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). Admonition here isn’t humiliation — it’s correction with love, with patience, with truth spoken without fear for one’s own image. A parent who shields the child from every consequence doesn’t raise him, he stunts him.

If I had to name a subject Romanian schools don’t teach, it wouldn’t be theoretical. It would have no textbook, no grade. It would be practiced daily, in every moment someone fails: the consequence is accepted, not negotiated. The truth is spoken, not softened to protect someone’s pride. The authority of the one correcting is respected, not contested from a position of wealth or status.

The old desert fathers knew this more clearly than we do. There’s a story of an elder who told his disciple to plant a cabbage upside down, roots pointing to the sky. The disciple, thinking he knew better how to plant a cabbage, planted it properly, the natural way. The elder, however, planted his exactly as he had said — upside down. And his cabbage took root and grew, while the disciple’s, planted “correctly,” never took at all.

The parable isn’t about gardening. It’s about the fact that obedience doesn’t follow the natural logic of things — it follows trust in the one placed over you to raise you. The disciple was technically right — and that’s precisely why nothing came of it. The elder “erred” by every rule, yet the fruit came from submission, not from skill.

So it is with the child who won’t listen to a teacher or a parent, simply because he believes he knows better, or because his parent assures him he’s right regardless of what the authority before him says. Fruit doesn’t come from always being right. It comes from the humility to obey even then — especially then — when you don’t understand why something is asked of you. This is the true subject no curriculum teaches: not only responsibility for one’s own deeds, but the obedience that makes room for growth beyond one’s own judgment.
