If your future self could send you one sentence, what do you hope it would say?

If my future self could send me one sentence, I would want it to be this: “You stayed awake.” Not “you succeeded,” not “you were happy” — only that. That I did not fall asleep along the way, that I kept watching over my heart the way a guard watches at the gate of a city, even when no one was knocking. The rest — the fruits, the praise, the calm or the storm — is not in my hands. But wakefulness, that moment-by-moment attention, can be asked of me, and so I hope that is what that sentence, if it ever comes, will speak of.
