The Only Real Conspiracy / Singura conspirație reală

What’s a conspiracy theory you actually find believable?

Today’s prompt asked what conspiracy theory I actually find believable. To many, the answer will be surprising — because it isn’t found in any newspaper or forum. There is exactly one conspiracy I believe with my whole heart, and it isn’t staged in political backrooms. It unfolds inside every human soul.

The Apostle Paul said it plainly two thousand years ago: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12). Here is the true plot — not one hatched by men, but one carried out by “spiritual wickedness,” which never rests from its work against the image of God in man.

This unseen war is not fought with weapons but with thoughts. Evagrius Ponticus and St. Nicetas Stethatos described in detail how the enemy never shows himself openly, but slips in a small, seemingly innocent thought, which then grows into passion, and the passion darkens the mind and enslaves the will. This is not a theory — it is an experience known to anyone who prays with attentiveness: the thought that comes “out of nowhere” never truly comes out of nowhere.

And the most cunning tool of this plot is prelest — spiritual self-deception. Here lies the true “conspiracy”: the enemy has no need to drag you toward open sin; it is enough to convince you that you are already holy, that your inner light is grace and not illusion. St. Symeon the New Theologian, and later St. Ignatius Brianchaninov, warned that this delusion is the gravest sickness precisely because the one caught in it does not know he has fallen. The plot succeeds exactly where the victim believes himself most awake.

And finally, there is “the god of this age,” of whom the Apostle says he “hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ… should shine unto them” (2 Corinthians 4:4). No hidden hand is needed to steer world events — the system is already built from the passions of each of us, multiplied and gathered into a common spirit of the age, which teaches us to call evil good and good evil.

So the only conspiracy I truly believe in needs no hidden evidence, because it hides in plain sight: in every thought that tempts me, in every moment of self-satisfaction, in every silent surrender to the spirit of this world. St. Peter tells us plainly who the architect is: “your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). The only defense against this conspiracy is not an investigation, but watchfulness — vigilance of the mind and unceasing prayer.
