Lord… — The Cry That Becomes Prayer / Doamne… — strigătul care se face rugăciune

What’s the last movie that made you cry?

I wept not because the scene was sad, but because I recognized something true in it: the purest prayer is not the one spoken beautifully, but the one torn out of pain. The Psalmist says, “I cried unto the Lord with my voice; with my voice unto the Lord did I make my supplication” (Ps. 141:1). It is not an elaborate prayer — it is a cry. And the Apostle Paul tells us that Christ Himself, in the days of His flesh, “offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears” (Heb. 5:7).

St. John Climacus calls tears “a second baptism” — weeping (penthos) that washes the soul deeper than water. And St. Isaac the Syrian says that when the mind no longer has words, and only the cry rises from the heart, that is the sign that prayer has become the work of the Spirit, no longer a human technique. The old man in the film was not “making” prayer — prayer was making him.

Perhaps this is why such scenes touch us: because somewhere beneath all our spiritual talk, we too long for a cry that true. “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matt. 5:4).
