Without Makeup / Fără machiaj

Have you ever liked a villain more than the hero? Who and why?

This theme isn’t only theological. Psychology calls it projection and self-deception: a person who cannot bear his own shadow expels it onto someone else and settles by judging them. Philosophy, in Sartre, calls it bad faith (mauvaise foi) — the lie one tells oneself to avoid owning one’s freedom and responsibility; in Socrates, by contrast, know thyself remains the only road to real virtue. These four Gospel moments put three languages — theological, psychological, philosophical — to say, each in its own vocabulary, the same thing.

The publican (Luke 18:9-14). Theologically: one leaves the temple set right, the other puffed up. Psychologically: the Pharisee practices what we’d now call moral licensing — accumulated good deeds become a balance he believes buys him the right to judge. His nous is fully occupied with the inventory of his own merits, leaving no room for self-examination. Philosophically: he’s Sartre’s man in bad faith — playing the role of „the Righteous One” so convincingly he forgets it’s a role, not an essence. The publican, by contrast, has no role to play; his seven-word prayer is the most lucid act in the whole parable.

The woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11). Theologically: the stone never thrown falls into the soul that held it. Psychologically: their withdrawal, „beginning with the eldest,” is almost an experiment in how self-awareness grows with age once defenses stop blocking it — each recalls, in turn, his own fall. It’s projection dissolving on its own before a single plain question. Philosophically: Christ doesn’t abolish the Law, He moves the question from the plane of the deed to the plane of the one judging — an almost Kantian move: the law stays universal, but whoever applies it cannot step outside his own condition of also being under it.

The sinful woman with the myrrh (Luke 7:36-50). Theologically: „he who is forgiven little, loves little.” Psychologically: Simon judges her, and in his mind indirectly judges Christ too — the classic mechanism of displacing one’s own unacknowledged shame onto those around him. She doesn’t defend herself, doesn’t explain, doesn’t argue — the silence and tears are the language of someone no longer hiding from herself, which psychology recognizes as the mark of an integrated conscience, not a fragmented one. Philosophically: her gesture — the touch, the tears, the hair — is a language of the body before any word, closer to what some existentialist philosophers call bodily authenticity than any moral discourse of Simon’s.

The thief on the cross (Luke 23:39-43). Theologically: he enters Paradise first. Psychologically: facing death, psychic defenses collapse — what psychology today calls terror management, except in him it produces not denial but clarity: „we indeed justly.” It’s perhaps the only moment in the whole Gospel where a man acknowledges his deed with no trace of rationalization left. Philosophically: it’s an almost pure instance of what Kierkegaard would call the leap — he has no time for gradual ethical construction, only one act of total, immediate recognition that changes everything left of his life, even if what was left was only an hour.

The thread stays the same, now confirmed by three voices. It isn’t sin that separates a person from God, but the mask of innocence laid over it. Psychology calls this self-deception, philosophy bad faith, theology the nous blinded by the false light of a good deed. And in all three languages, those counted villains remain, paradoxically, the only figures in these four scenes who looked at themselves without makeup.
