he Screen | The Film in the Cave of the Mind / Ecranul | Filmul din peștera minții

What’s the weirdest movie you’ve ever watched?

The strangest film I have ever watched has no title, no director and no ticket. The mind projects it in silence on the inner screen. Plato described it before cinema existed (Republic VII): men chained facing a wall, who take shadows for truth because they have seen nothing else. The strangeness is not in the film but in the viewer, who forgets he is watching and walks into the picture.

The Philokalic Fathers call this projection logismoi, thoughts that arrive as images. Evagrius shows that the adversary does not touch the mind directly but moves it through shapes stored in memory and imagination. That is why he asks that at prayer the mind reach formlessness, without image or shape (On Prayer, 117). Not because images are sinful in themselves, but because they are imagined creatures, and God does not enter any imagining. Modern psychology has measured what the Fathers saw with the eye of the mind: in a well-known study (Killingsworth and Gilbert, 2010), people’s minds were elsewhere almost half the time, and they were less happy exactly then. Wandering does not rest us; it wears us down.

Here dogma changes the question. If the image itself were guilty, we would escape by switching off the projector with our own will, and that is technique and pride. But Christ is „the image of the invisible God” (Col 1:15). The Word became visible, and the Church fears not the image but the idol: the image points to a Person, the idol takes His place. The thought that keeps me in the hall is an idol; His Name, spoken in the heart, is an image that leads me out. The hesychasts, from St. Hesychios to St. Gregory Palamas, do not ask us to force the images away, but to bring the mind down into the heart, before the Person. The secret is not emptying the screen but ceasing to look at the wall.

And beware: Paul says that Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light (2 Cor 11:14). The most dangerous film is not the ugly one but the luminous one, in which I see myself handsome and devout. The reel changes, but the viewer stays the same.

I have seen in myself that it is not the images that disturb me so much as the pleasure with which I follow them. They do not keep me in the hall; I keep myself there, because it is my own film.

A brother asked an elder: „Father, why do I see so many images in prayer?” The elder said: „Because you are looking at the wall, not at Him who made the light.” The brother asked: „And how do I stop looking?” „Do not fight the shadows,” said the elder. „Turn around. A shadow has no power over one who no longer sits with his back to the light.”
