The Disciple of Pain / Ucenicul durerii

What’s one thing you know now that would have saved your younger self a lot of pain?

I could tell nothing to the young man I was, and I would not want to. What I know today is not of the things that are given but of the things that are paid for, and he paid. Had I spared him the pain, I would have spared him the knowledge. The Greeks said it long ago: páthei máthos, learning through suffering. The Fathers say it more deeply: „No chastening seems joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it” (Hebrews 12:11). And Paul heard: „My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Information can be transmitted; understanding cannot. You can tell someone „fire burns,” but you cannot place the burn in him. St. Maximus the Confessor sees in pain a pedagogue of Providence: it halts desire in its rush and turns the mind toward the One who heals. Psychology arrived late at half of this: Tedeschi and Calhoun describe „posttraumatic growth,” and McAdams shows that identity is a story in which wounds become the chapters that give the whole its meaning. Kierkegaard said that life is understood backwards but lived forwards. That is why the man of yesterday could not know: he lived forward, I understand backward, and between us stands pain as the only bridge.

There is another trap: the counterfactual, „if only I had known.” Psychologists call it upward counterfactual thinking; the Fathers call it the scattering of the mind among what no longer is. It is not repentance but rumination, and it resembles Lot’s wife looking back. Paul’s word, „forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead” (Philippians 3:13), does not mean denying the past but not letting it bind me. It does not ask us to forget the pain, only to stop bargaining with it.

Nietzsche does not reach this far either. Amor fati urges man to love his fate, but it loves it without Someone to carry it. The Christian does not love pain as blind destiny but gives thanks for it as the work of a Father: „In everything give thanks” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). The Eucharist, which means thanksgiving, is the ultimate form of this understanding: the past, the wound, and the man of yesterday are all brought to the same Table.

That young man is no stranger to me. He is not another person for me to teach but the root from which I grew. Every work of obedience I stand in today rests on what he endured. And if anything asks for change, it is not he but I, today: the same fall he carried I can repeat in this very hour, at the same threshold. I cannot correct the man of yesterday, but I can honor him by what I do today.

I have seen that people who weigh their past with the most skill are the slowest to decide in the present. They turn over each old moment, question it, judge it, and wake to find that their present life has passed them by. Skill without measure does not heal; it holds in place.

A brother said to an elder: „Father, had I known then what I know now, how much labor I would have been spared!” The elder answered: „Son, what you know is not among the things that are given but among the things that are paid for. Had you not paid, you would not know. Give thanks to the one who paid.”
