The Country at the Top of the List / Țara de la capătul listei

What’s a country that’s at the top of your bucket list?

The country I hold highest has no borders on any map and asks for no visa. The Psalmist calls it „the land of the living” (Ps. 26:13), and Christ gives it to the meek: „Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” It is inherited, not conquered. Modern man searches for it on foot, with a ticket and luggage, while it lies within, where no flight can take him.

The desert fathers knew this sickness and called it acedia, the noonday demon. It whispers to the monk that his place is wrong and that real life is elsewhere, beyond the wall and beyond the mountain. Today this demon has a travel agency and an app. Pascal said that all of man’s misery comes from not knowing how to sit quietly in a room. A brother came to Abba Moses asking for a word, and the elder said: „Go, sit in your cell, and your cell will teach you everything.” The brother asked for a road, and the old man gave him a room. This small ground between four walls is the hardest to cross, because there you meet the one stranger who follows you everywhere: yourself, with your thoughts, your passions and your emptiness.

Modern psychology would say we flee what we cannot integrate. The Fathers said it more simply: you cannot run from what you are, you can only turn back, and the turning back is called repentance. When the mind descends into the heart, as the Philokalia teaches, the same place changes without moving: the desert becomes a garden, and silence fills with Presence. St. Isaac the Syrian bids you enter the inner chamber, „and you will see the ladder to the kingdom”. It is not another country but the same one, seen with cleansed eyes.

So I would not put any country of this earth at the top of my list, though I would gaze on them gladly if they crossed my path. The true list has one line: the land of the living, which I reach not by walking but by humility. Until then, my task is not to leave the door of my own heart and not to avoid the silence.
