The Left Hand And Yesterday’s Pride: Spiritual Watchfulness / Mâna stângă și mândria de ieri: Trezvie și mândrie duhovnicească

What’s something you’ve done that your past self would be proud of?

The question asks for a glance over the shoulder, and Christ forbade exactly that glance: „Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth” (Matthew 6:3). The memory of a good deed is the left hand that found out. Evagrius places vainglory among the thoughts that do not attack the deed but wait for it to end and then settle on it. St. John Climacus describes it likewise: it does not oppose the work but follows it like a thief. St. Maximus the Confessor goes deeper, to philautia, disordered self-love, the mother of all passions. So yesterday’s self cannot be „proud” without today’s self falling into it.

Psychology says the same in another tongue. Bem’s self-perception theory shows we infer our identity from our past acts, like an outside witness. „Moral licensing” shows that remembering good done grants leniency toward the next wrong. Yesterday’s deed becomes a credit, and the credit gets spent on sin.

Augustine speaks of distentio animi, the soul stretched between what was and what will be, resting nowhere. The Fathers’ answer to this stretching is St. Gregory of Nyssa’s epektasis: from Philippians 3:13, the endless straining „toward those things which are before”, because God is infinite and no one ever reaches the end. The one who looks at what he has done stops running. The Lord says: „When ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants” (Luke 17:10).

I do not wish to change the past, because I cannot. But I see that the same battle from back then is fought now: the same thoughts, the same pathos, only in a different face. My nous, which should stand watch, looks back at its deeds as at a shop window. The only thing yesterday’s self could be proud of is that today’s self no longer looks at him.

I have seen people keep their good deeds like a fortune, with ledgers hidden in the mind. They grew stingy with mercy and lavish with judgment. Whoever contradicted them was turned away like a debtor. It was not the past that condemned them, but their leaning on it.

A brother said to an elder: „Father, today I fasted well.” The elder answered: „And tomorrow, what will you do?” The brother was silent. The elder said: „Then begin now.”

Bătrânul a răspuns: „Și mâine ce vei face?” Fratele a tăcut. Bătrânul a zis: „Atunci începe de acum.”
