Martha and the Present Hour / Marta și ceasul de acum

How do you manage stress?

The word „stress” is new; the sickness is old. The Fathers called it merimna, the care that tears the mind apart: „Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things” (Luke 10:41). Modern psychology places stress in appraisal, where the demand seems greater than my strength. The Fathers go deeper: the wound is not in the task but in the logismos, the thought that lives in the future, where I am not and so cannot be helped. Evagrius calls acedia „the noonday demon”: it makes the day long, the work heavy and the present place unbearable.

The Stoic says: hold only what depends on you (Epictetus). It is wise, but it has no Person in it. Christ gives no technique, but a transfer: „Do not be anxious about tomorrow” (Matthew 6:34) and „Cast all your anxiety on Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). The care does not vanish; it changes bearers.

In practice: I bring the mind back to the present hour and lower it into the heart, say a short prayer, do measured labor (discernment), and remember death, which restores the true scale of what suffocates me. I have seen that the more a man thinks, the harder he finds it to decide, and the worse he decides. A mind without the heart does not find peace, it only circles.

A brother asked an elder, „How do I get free of worry?” The elder asked, „What do you have to do now?” „Nothing, only talk with you.” „Then be wholly here. Tomorrow, when it comes, it will bring God’s grace with it.”

Cuvântul „stres” e nou, boala e veche.
