Sin does not begin when the hand acts, but when the mind ceases to keep watch.
The heart is like a city, and the mind is the watchman standing upon its walls. If the watchman falls asleep, the enemy enters without resistance. In the same way, evil thoughts gain power not by their mere arrival, but by being welcomed and nourished within us.
Do not be troubled simply because you are tempted. No one is exempt from the struggle. Be concerned only when you begin to converse with temptation as though it were a friend. An evil thought is far easier to drive away at the gate than after it has become master of the heart.
Watchfulness is not unceasing tension, but a peaceful attentiveness before God. The soul that prays with humility gradually learns to discern what comes from grace and what comes from deception. Thus the mind is enlightened, and the heart remains at peace.
Do not try to conquer every thought by your own strength. Turn your mind toward Christ. Light does not wrestle with darkness; it simply appears, and the darkness departs.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)
