The animalic is not an insult but an ontological level. It is the state in which man can live without God: instinct, impulse, reaction, survival. The fall does not throw man into nothingness but into the animalic, because the animalic is the movement of nature without light. Saint Maximus shows that passions are irrational movements entering man through sin; when the reason of nature fades, impulse becomes law. The animalic is not behavior but orientation: man no longer lives vertically but horizontally; no longer seeks meaning but pleasure; no longer seeks truth but the avoidance of pain. The mind no longer judges but reacts; the will no longer chooses but defends; the heart no longer loves but closes. Man becomes animal not because he is punished but because he can no longer say “no” to passion. Passion is not great; fallen man is small. The animalic is man severed from God, reduced to the mechanisms of nature: desire, fear, defense, consumption. The image remains, the likeness is lost. Healing does not come through morality but through return: obedience reorders the movement of nature, enlightens the mind, frees the will. The animalic is not healed through effort but through the restored bond with God. Man is not called to be animal but son. Everything else is detail.
