The Work Beyond the Work / Lucrarea de dincolo de lucru

What are your favorite side-hustle ideas?

The best „side job” is the one Saint Paul had: he made tents with his hands so as to burden no one (Acts 18:3; 1 Thess. 2:9), yet his true work lay elsewhere. The desert monks likewise wove baskets: the hands earned the bread while the mind stayed in prayer. A trade feeds the body; the work of the heart feeds the person.

„Hustle” means agitation, and the Fathers knew what agitation breeds. Martha is anxious and troubled about many things, yet „one thing is needful” (Luke 10:41-42). Evagrius names acedia as the demon who whispers that the place is wrong and the labor is in vain. The greatest enterprise remains the Lord’s question: „What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?” (Matt. 16:26).

My favorite idea: make every job a wicker basket and the heart a workshop. Not a second income, but a second work: the guarding of the mind.
