Learning to See

It is not the eyes that see most clearly, but the purified heart.

Many look upon the world and see only what is useful or dangerous to themselves. Few see every created thing as a gift from God and every person as a mystery bearing the divine image. It is not the lack of light that darkens the soul, but the darkening of its inner sight.

The passions distort the way we see. Pride sees rivals everywhere. Envy sees only what it lacks. Anger sees enemies. Love, however, sees people for whom Christ shed His blood. A pure heart is not naïve but truthful; it sees evil without losing peace and sees good without becoming proud.

When you pray, ask less for circumstances to change and more for the eyes of your heart to be enlightened. The one who begins to see truly no longer complains so easily or judges so quickly. He discovers that God is at work in secret even where bodily eyes see nothing.

Do not be quick to judge what you see today. God is still at work on what you call unfinished.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8)
