The Time-Wreck / Rabla timpului

If you had a time machine and could send just one message to your past self, what would it say?

If I had a time machine, I wouldn’t send anything back. Not because I have nothing to say, but because such a machine would be nothing more than a wreck — a beautiful nonsense, a dream that tricks us into believing change lives in the past rather than in the present.

With God, time isn’t a road; it’s depth. It doesn’t flow, it doesn’t return, it doesn’t repair itself. It is a continuous present that begins the moment we are born and accompanies us like a calling. And instead of listening to that calling, we keep climbing into the same old wreck of regret, hoping it will carry us back to fix what no longer exists.

Regret is a wreck: it starts only in imagination, it coughs smoke, it promises roads that lead nowhere. It is the desire to erase the place where God carved us. It is distrust in His work.

But the past holds more than wounds. It holds callings. It holds the pure desires we abandoned not out of sin, but out of fear. The child who wanted something good and lacked courage. The young man who loved something true and lacked time. The talent buried not out of malice, but out of misunderstanding.

There, in that place, nothing is wrecked. There lies a beginning.

Psychologically, regret is mourning — we weep for a self that never existed, a self without a fall, a self we imagine we “should have been.” But unfulfilled desire is different: it is alive. It is the change we failed to make when the moment came — and the change we can still make now.

Patristically, Abba Dorotheos says the one who falls and rises climbs higher than the one who never fell, because he has learned his own weakness and, through it, true humility. Isaac the Syrian goes further: those healed through repentance sometimes surpass those who never fell at all.

The real time machine is not a wreck.
The real time machine is change.

I do not go back to repair the past.
I go inward to be changed.

So my message would not travel backward. It would come forward, toward me:

“Stop trying to repair me. Change me. I am your beginning; you are my fulfillment.”

The regret I leave where it is — for from it I was built.
The pure desire I call here — for from it I can still build.

And the time machine?
A rusted piece of nonsense we keep pushing along the road of life, hoping it will take us somewhere that no longer exists.

Change is the only real vehicle.
And it never goes backward.
It only goes deeper.

Dacă aș avea o mașină a timpului, n-aș trimite nimic înapoi.

E neîncrederea că El a lucrat bine.

Adevărata mașină a timpului e schimbarea.
