There is no burden heavier than a heart that refuses to forgive, and no freedom greater than a heart that places everything into God’s hands.
To forgive does not mean pretending that evil was not evil, nor forcing yourself to forget what wounded you. It means renouncing the desire to repay evil with evil and entrusting judgment to the One who is both just and merciful. Forgiveness does not change the past, but it changes the heart of the one who forgives.
As long as you keep bitterness within your soul, you remain bound to your wound. But the moment you begin to pray for the one who has hurt you, even if the pain remains, the chains begin to break. The grace of God reaches where revenge never can.
Remember how much God has forgiven you. No one can stand before Him claiming never to have needed mercy. The one who sees his own forgiven debts learns to be merciful toward the debts of his brother.
Do not wait for the other person to take the first step before your heart can find peace. Take the first step before God. Pray, bless, and leave justice in the Lord’s hands. Where forgiveness begins, true freedom begins.
“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” (Matthew 6:12)
