A person gradually becomes like what he loves most.
If the heart clings to passing things, it will be carried away with them and troubled whenever they are lost. But if it clings to Christ, it will find a foundation that neither time, nor death, nor the changing world can shake.
It is not enough to know Christ through words or books. He desires to dwell within your heart. Every prayer offered with attention, every commandment fulfilled in love, every hidden act of mercy, and every cross borne with patience enlarges the place you give Him within yourself.
Ask your heart from time to time where it turns when it is free. Wherever your thoughts run without being forced, there your treasure is. If the name of Christ becomes sweeter to you than human praise, more precious than earthly gain, and dearer than your own will, then the inner man is growing in secret.
Do not seek only the gifts of God. Seek God Himself. The one who has found Christ has found the treasure that no one can take away and the riches that never diminish.
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21)
