I have no app holding my heart captive.

What are your favorite 5 apps on your phone?

Whoever answers “five favorite apps” is lying to themselves, gently: in truth there aren’t five, there are twenty, thirty — the mind, merciful to itself, counts only the peaks, not the sea beneath them. It’s the old cunning of passion: it shows itself small, countable, “just a few,” so it won’t be recognized as dominion. The Church Fathers called this scattering (perispasmos) — it doesn’t matter how many windows you have open, but the fact that none of them leaves you whole anymore.

Nor would it be fair to speak only of the screen. The app is only the newest face of an old thief: you’re just as easily stolen by a word heard and carried all day, a worry for tomorrow, an image of yourself you want to defend in another’s eyes, a memory you chew on instead of letting pass. Psychologically, the mechanism is identical — attention, which is the food of the heart, flows wherever you believe something must be guarded: a profile, a reputation, a fear, a desire. The screen has only made visible and measurable what once happened unseen, in the hidden chamber of thought.

Philosophically, the question “what do you use” hides the real question: what is using you? Because any thing, however small, becomes a master the moment you can no longer set it down without unease. It isn’t the number of apps that betrays you, but what you feel when you lose them for an hour — that’s where you see where your treasure has actually been placed.

That’s why the one who honestly says “there’s no app I can’t part with” hasn’t answered about the phone, but about the heart — that it is, at least a little, free of too many small dominions: the ones on screen, and the ones without a screen, just as old as man.
