The Book That Reopens / Cartea care se redeschide

Have you ever regretted reading a book — which one and why?

I have never regretted a book for what it wrote, but for the other book I was forced to reopen by reading it. Prayer 99 names this exactly: the book of my conscience — written long ago, sealed shut by neglect, which „only with difficulty let itself be opened.” Any outer book that „strikes” me does nothing more than turn, against my will, a page of the book within.

The prayer states something psychologically precise before it states something spiritual: opening this book is not a simple act but one met with resistance — „with difficulty it let itself be opened.” My conscience does not want silence out of malice; it has been covered, layer upon layer, by a „scattered” life, the way rubble covers a lamp without extinguishing it (Abba Dorotheos). What Rogers called incongruence — the gap between the true self and the comfortable self-image I have built — is precisely this resistance to opening. The book was never lost; I refused to read it.

But the prayer goes deeper than psychology, naming a second wound, not just resistance but deception within the very act of reading: „Only the marked sins can be read.” The first opening is not liberating — it shows only as much as the cunning conscience allows to be seen, a partial selection that leaves the soul believing it has seen everything, though it has seen only a margin. This is exactly the mechanism psychoanalysis calls rationalization or reaction formation: the mind does not lie through total silence but through partial confessions, enough to quiet, not enough to heal. Hence the prayer’s blunt statement: „God, only God can deliver me from my cunning conscience.” Courage alone does not suffice to open the book; grace is needed not to read it falsely.

Here lies the mystery of the „striking” we feel in reading. A good book gives me no new information about myself; it hastens the second opening, which the prayer names explicitly: „Calling to my aid the mercy and power of the Godhead, I open again the book of conscience, and again I look at the multitude and kind of my sins.” The first reading was mine, cunning, partial. The second is summoned — called forth through prayer — and therefore shows more: „the multitude and kind” of sins, not just the „marked” ones. An outer book, when it truly hurts, functions as this summoned second eye: it does not show me what I never knew, but forces a second reading of what I already partly knew and had chosen to read in truncated form.

Philosophically, this is the same structure Socrates revealed in his interlocutors without giving them anything new — anamnesis turned inside out: I do not learn, I recognize; and recognition hurts more than learning, because it strips me of the excuse of ignorance. Kierkegaard would call this regret a form of despair — the refusal to be the self the book (outer or inner) has just shown me. And the prayer names the exact consequence of this truncated, repeated reading: „the results of a sinful life are blindness of mind, hardening and numbness of heart” — not sin itself, but the growing incapacity to read it at all. This is what psychology calls desensitization, and patristics calls insensibility (anaisthesia): each truncated reading of the inner book thickens the skin over the letters, until finally „the soul does not feel that it is dead.”

Perhaps the most psychologically precise line of the prayer is the least noticed: „I am content with my state! I am content not out of humility, but because of my blindness.” Here any illusion of therapeutic self-sufficiency collapses — the contentment positive psychology sometimes seeks as a final goal may be, the prayer says, the very symptom of the disease, not the sign of healing. Not every inner peace is grace; some peace is only the book closed again.

This is why „reopening the book of conscience” is not a purely psychological act — introspection, mindfulness, self-knowledge — but one requested and received: „Grant that I may see in the light of Your grace.” Without this requested light, the second reading would fall into the same cunning as the first — I would again see only the „marked” sins, enough to feel honest with myself, not enough to be healed. The very seeing of sin, the prayer says, is itself a „great gift,” not a personal achievement — „the great gift of the seeing of my sins,” which gives birth to repentance, not the reverse.

I have never regretted, then, any book that led me, even against its own will, toward the second opening of the book within. I have only regretted the moments when, reopened, I read it still with the old eye — content, blind, hardened — and closed it again believing I had read it all.

PRAYER 99

That terrible time will come, that dreadful hour will arrive, in which all my sins will stand exposed before God the Judge, before His angels, before all mankind. The state of my soul has been filled with dread beneath the sins recorded in the book of my conscience, which I have committed in deed, in word, and in thought. My conscience, unexamined for so long, has only with difficulty let itself be opened. Opening it, I did not find the comfort I expected. Only the marked sins can be read. God, only God can deliver me from my cunning conscience. Only God can grant me the sight of my sins, of my fall, in which lies the seed of all human sins. Calling to my aid the mercy and power of the Godhead, I open again the book of my conscience; again I look at the multitude and kind of my sins; I look at what my sins have done to me! The results of a sinful life are blindness of the mind, hardening and numbness of the heart. The multitude of my sins casts me into the deepest sorrow. My heart has been troubled by such a sight; my labor has been filled with obstacles raised by the habit of sin, which forcibly draws toward new sins. Sinful passions have grown old and have grievously wounded me because of my scattered life. I cast the whole countless multitude of my sins into the ocean of God’s mercy. The senses of my heart are drawn by the tempting spectacle, which resembles a harlot. Sin works in me through sinful thought, works through the sinful feeling of the heart and the body; it works through the bodily senses, it works through imagination. Within me, in my whole being, lives the corruption of sin, which consents to and assists the sin that fights against me from without. I am like a condemned convict, dragged wherever anyone wishes, for the convict, bound in chains, has no power to defend himself. The devil labors unceasingly to deceive me and to destroy me. I was born into this land of weeping and misfortunes! Yet paradise was brought to me by the Redeemer; here it was planted in my heart. Through sin I have driven paradise out of my heart. Now within it there is a mixture of good and evil, a terrible struggle between good and evil, a confusion of countless passions, a torment—a foretaste of the eternal torment of hell. In myself I see the proof that I am a son of Adam: I retain his inclination toward evil; I consent to the enticements of the deceiver even when I know they prepare death for me. In vain do I blame my forefathers for the sin in which I have become a partaker; I have been freed from the slavery of sin by the Redeemer, and now I fall into sins not by compulsion, but by my own will. The passions strive, each seeking to seize dominion over me; unceasingly they toss me from one to another, they stir me, they trouble me, and I do not see my own wretched state! Over my mind hangs an impenetrable veil of darkness; upon my heart lies the heavy stone of insensibility. Will my mind ever come to itself, will it ever wish to turn toward the good? It is opposed by the heart, accustomed to sinful pleasure; it is opposed also by my body, which has acquired animal desires. My being—mind, soul, and body—are divided, working at cross-purposes, opposing one another, and only when sin is at work do they find a brief agreement, one hostile to God. This is my state! This is the death of the soul during the life of the body! And I am content with my state! I am content not out of humility, but because of my blindness, because of my hardness of heart. The soul does not feel that it is dead! I am wholly seized by worldly cares; I care little for the need of my soul! I have not inherited repentance, because I still do not see my own sin. I cannot see my sin as long as I take sweetness in sin and permit myself to taste it, even only in thoughts and in the heart’s consent. Because I am immature, I cannot sink into silence and weeping before God; I bring before Him a humble prayer, a prayer for the forgiveness of sins and for healing from sinful passions, from these spiritual infirmities that arise from sins committed willingly and repeated over a long time. I am wholly unworthy of God. Lord, give me understanding, that I may know Your teachings. Incline my heart toward the words of Your mouth, and let Your word descend like dew. I stand with fear and reverence before the Great God, Who is able to cleanse my sins and renew me through His All-Holy Spirit. Lord! Grant that I may see my sins in such a way that my mind, wholly drawn to attentiveness toward my own sins, may cease to see the faults of my neighbor and may see everyone in this way as good. Grant my heart to abandon the destructive care for worldly deficiencies, to unite all its cares only in the care for obtaining the purity and holiness commanded and prepared for us by You. Grant to me, who have defiled the garment of my soul, to whiten it again: it was already washed through the waters of baptism, and now, after defilement, this garment needs to be washed through the waters of tears. Grant that I may see, in the light of Your grace, the many kinds of infirmities that live within me, stifling in the heart the spiritual movements, bringing into it instead the movements of blood and flesh, which are hostile to the Kingdom of God. Grant me the great gift of repentance, before which goes, and which is born of, the great gift of the seeing of my sins. Guard me with these great gifts from the abysses of self-deception, which arises in the soul because of its sinfulness, unheeded and not understood, and is born of the workings of the passion of sweetness and vainglory that live within me, unheeded and not understood. Guard me with these great gifts on my way to You, Who call those who acknowledge their sinfulness and cast away those who believe themselves righteous, that we may glorify You forever, into the everlasting blessedness of the One True God, the Redeemer of those enslaved, and the Savior of those who are lost. Amen.

Prima citire fusese a mea, vicleană, parţială.

Amin.
