The world says that freedom means doing whatever you desire. Christ reveals that true freedom begins when you learn to desire what is good.
A person ruled by the passions imagines himself to be free, yet he is carried about by his own desires like a ship without a rudder. Today anger leads him, tomorrow vainglory, the next day fear or pleasure. He is not master of himself, but a servant of whatever pulls him in different directions.
Obedience to God does not diminish a person; it restores him to the truth of his own nature. Just as a fish lives in water and a bird in the air, so the human soul was created to live in the will of God. When it departs from that will, it finds not freedom but wandering.
Every commandment of Christ is an open door to the freedom of the heart. By forgiving, you are freed from hatred. By humbling yourself, you are freed from pride. By showing mercy, you are freed from the love of possessions. By praying, you are freed from the slavery of anxious care. In this way, obedience becomes the beginning of true freedom.
Do not ask how many commandments you must keep. Ask instead how near you desire to be to Christ. The one who loves Him does not see His commandments as chains, but as the steps that lead to Life.
“If you abide in My word… you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31–32)
