Not everything that appears good comes from God, and not everything that is difficult is contrary to His will. Therefore, a person needs not only zeal, but also discernment.
The enemy does not always tempt through obvious evil. At times he hides behind good deeds done without humility, words spoken without love, or zeal lacking wisdom. Where discernment is absent, even good intentions can lead the soul astray.
Discernment is born from a heart purified through repentance and enlightened by prayer. The person who hastily decides according to his own mind often goes astray. The one who pauses, prays, and seeks God’s will begins to see things not as he wishes them to be, but as they are before the Lord.
Do not trust every thought that comes to you, nor every feeling that stirs within you. Ask whether they produce humility, peace, love, and obedience to God. A tree is known by its fruit. In the same way, thoughts are known by the fruit they leave in the heart.
Ask God not only for the strength to do what is good, but also for the light to recognize it. A heart illumined by grace will choose the humble and secure path rather than the brilliant road that nourishes self-love.
“And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent.” (Philippians 1:9–10)
