Tell us about your morning routine.
The prompt asks about a morning routine. Yet the Saviour left His disciples no routine, but a commandment: „men ought always to pray and not to faint” (Luke 18:1). The Apostle Paul says it even more briefly: „Pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17). A routine cannot be kept without ceasing. The unceasing is not a longer repetition but another state of man. This is why the Holy Fathers gave not routines but a rule, a program. The fixed hour of youth becomes, over a lifetime, a heart that keeps watch: „I sleep, but my heart waketh” (Song 5:2). The rule is the scaffolding, unceasing prayer is the house, and the scaffolding comes down once the house stands. Here too the rule is made for man, not man for the rule (Mark 2:27).
Evagrius defines prayer as the ascent of the mind to God, and Abba Isaac in Cassian leads toward holding one short verse in the mind without interruption. Neither speaks of exact execution, but of watchfulness. A routine asks you to tick a box, while a rule teaches you to look.
The rule differs from the routine on the day it is missed. Whoever loses a rule feels longing. Whoever loses a routine feels disturbance, irritation, anger. The ritual had been regulating anxiety, and omitting it releases the tension it kept in check. In motivation psychology this is introjected regulation: „I must, or I am guilty.” The pressure is constant, and you notice it only when you stop. Prayer then becomes a debt owed to oneself, and the debtor is always irritable.
Evagrius places vainglory before pride. Vexation at a broken program may show that prayer was feeding a self-image, that of the faithful and unshaken man. St. Maximus would call it philautia, self-love slipped into the very act of prayer.
Aristotle calls virtue hexis, a state acquired through repetition but with choice (proairesis). Mechanical habit tames the body, not the will. Kierkegaard distinguishes repetition, which renews each time, from habit, which dulls. The rule renews itself every morning, while the routine merely wears out.
Apophthegm. A brother said to an elder: „Father, today I lost my rule of prayer and my soul was troubled.” And the elder said to him: „He who loves his rule is vexed when he loses it. He who loves God prays even when he can no longer find his rule.”
- What rises in us on the day the program breaks: longing or irritation?
- To whom was the prayer owed, to God or to our image of ourselves?
- After years of keeping the rule, has prayer made us gentler or harsher toward those around us?
- Do we still carry the program, or does it carry us?
