The Mystery of the Watchful Heart

A soul asleep in carelessness does not notice God’s work, but a watchful heart discovers His presence even in small things.

Watchfulness is the state in which a person guards his mind and heart, paying attention to the thoughts that enter, the words he speaks, and the desires that arise within. It is not anxious tension, but peaceful attention, like a guard watching over a beloved city.

Many great falls begin with small things: a thought accepted without discernment, anger held within, a hidden judgment, or a desire allowed to grow. The watchful person does not wait for the storm to break; he sees the clouds gathering and seeks refuge in prayer.

It is not enough to pray only with your lips. Guard also the movements of your heart. Ask yourself: “Where does this thought come from? Does it draw me closer to God or pull me away? Does it bring peace or disturbance?” In this way, the soul learns to distinguish the voice of grace from the voice of the passions.

Watchfulness does not mean living in fear of every thought, but living with the desire to remain close to Christ. The one who loves God watches not because he is afraid, but because he does not want to lose communion with the One he loves.

Keep the lamp of your heart burning. The Bridegroom comes, and blessed is the one who does not sleep, but waits for Him with love.

“Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation.” (Matthew 26:41)
