The Celebrity Who Fled Glory / Celebritatea care a fugit de slavă

Which celebrity would you love to meet, and what would you talk about?

If I could meet a celebrity, I would not choose someone the world knows, but someone God glorified precisely because he fled the world: Abba Arsenius the Great, once tutor to the emperor’s sons, who left the palace for the desert. Asked why he avoided people, he answered that God knows he loves them, but he cannot be with God and with men at once.

Today’s celebrity is a relationship without a person: we look at another for the face we dare not seek in ourselves, and our desire is no longer our own but borrowed. The Fathers call it kenodoxia, vainglory: the daughter of pride and the hardest sickness to see, because it feeds on good deeds themselves. The Lord asks: „How can you believe, who receive glory from one another?” (John 5:44).

What would we talk about? I would stay silent. He would tell me what he once told another: „Flee, be silent, be still.” And in the end I would learn that the most dangerous celebrity I can meet is the one in the mirror: the self I make known and ask applause from.

A brother asked an elder: „How will I know whether I seek myself, or God?” The elder said: „If it would be all one to you whether anyone saw you.”
