What’s the best online course you’ve ever taken?
The course I dropped
The best online course I ever took is the one I dropped. The screen went dark, I saw my own face in it, and that was the beginning of the lesson.
The collector of light
Modern man does not lack teaching. He lacks transformation. He owns thousands of lessons and no change. He gathers information and calls it progress. The progress bar reaches a hundred percent and he believes his soul has filled up too. The certificate arrives by email, but the passion stays untouched, right where it was yesterday.
None of this is new. The Preacher said: „Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh” (Ecclesiastes 12:12). And the Apostle Paul writes of those who are „ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2 Timothy 3:7). We just put it on a monthly subscription.
How the flight is disguised
Psychology calls it avoidance. The mind builds a safe place where you feel you are doing something, so you don’t have to do the thing that hurts. Endless preparation is the most respectable form of procrastination, because no one judges you for studying. I read a little more about forgiveness so I don’t have to forgive. I listen to one more lecture on silence so I don’t have to be silent. I keep looking for the method so I don’t have to begin.
The Fathers saw this centuries before screens existed: self-love dressed up as zeal. It is not a noisy sin, which is why it is so dangerous. It doesn’t look like gluttony or wrath. It looks like virtue and borrows its name.
Saint James says it plainly: „Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22). The deception doesn’t come from ignorance. It comes from knowing and staying put, happy that you know.
The philosopher’s book
It is told that a philosopher came to Saint Anthony the Great and asked how he managed without books. The great ascetic is said to have answered that his book was the nature of created things, and that it was always at hand whenever he wished to read the words of God. He did not despise Scripture, which he knew by heart. He meant that the purpose of the book is to lead you out of the book, so that you live what you have read.
There is also the story of a monk, Serapion, who sold even his Gospel to feed the hungry. He said he had sold the very word that told him: „Sell what you have and give to the poor.” It is not a call to cast books aside but a rebuke: the Gospel was written to be done, not merely owned.
The cell as a universe
A brother came to Abba Moses and begged him: „Give me a word.” The elder replied: „Go, sit in your cell, and your cell will teach you everything.”
This is the only course with no visible teacher, no certificate, no livestream, no audience. And it is the hardest, because the screen always gives you something else to look at, while the cell gives you nothing and only shows you yourself. That is why we flee from it. We are not afraid of solitude. We are afraid of meeting the one who sits there, namely ourselves, as we are when no one is watching.
But the cell is not empty. You are not alone in it. Christ, the Teacher, waits there every day, in the same place, without haste and without reproach. His course has no modules, and the lesson is always the same: „Repent” (Matthew 4:17).
What Socrates knew and could not give
„Know thyself.” Socrates said it beautifully, and modern man turned it into an industry: personality tests, typologies, labels, introspection apps. And still he knows himself less and less.
The Fathers added what was missing: man cannot know himself alone, because the instrument he examines himself with, the mind, is itself wounded by the passions. Whoever looks with a sick eye sees sickly. True self-knowledge happens in the light of the One who made you, not by the strain of the intellect, but by the grace that heals it. „In Thy light shall we see light” (Psalm 36:9).
That is why it produces neither pride nor despair. Whoever sees himself by his own strength either boasts or collapses. Whoever sees himself in Christ sees truly: a sinner and beloved at the same time. No course can give this, because it is not information. It is communion.
The hardest lesson: the grade „insufficient”
The Pharisee in the parable was a model student: he knew the law, fasted, gave alms, and boasted of it all. The publican had no diploma, only a „God, be merciful to me, a sinner” (Luke 18:13). And he went home justified.
So the best hour of my life was not an hour of study but one in which I closed the app, knelt down, and discovered I had no answer, no formula, no summary. Only a helpless prayer. There I received my first honest grade: insufficient. And from it, slowly, humility began to grow, the one virtue you can never tick off as finished, because the moment you think you have completed it, you have lost it.
The exam
The exam is not taken online. It is taken in the evening before sleep, when you no longer ask what did I learn today, but who was I today. Did I forgive, or only read about forgiveness? Did I keep silent, or only comment on silence? Did I love one person, or only analyze humanity?
And at the end of life, the Judge will not ask for certificates. He will ask: „I was hungry and you gave Me food” (Matthew 25:35). He will ask about small, quiet deeds that no platform recorded.
So if you want a good course, close the screen, enter your cell, and stay there until the One who waits for you says what no teacher could.
