The Stillness of the Heart

The stillness of the heart is born not from the absence of trials, but from the presence of God.

The sea is calm in its depths even when waves crash upon its surface. Likewise, the soul that brings its mind down into the heart and calls upon the Lord can preserve peace even in the midst of turmoil. Its peace does not come from circumstances, but from the confidence that God never abandons it.

The one who allows his heart to be ruled by every report, every word, and every fear becomes a slave to constant change. But the one whose hope is founded upon God is no longer carried about by every wind. He learns to wait, to pray, and to place into the Lord’s hands what he cannot bear alone.

Stillness is not indifference. It is the fruit of a heart that has laid its burden at the feet of Christ. In such a heart, prayer breathes naturally, and peace becomes stronger than fear.

Do not seek a life without storms. Seek a heart in which Christ may rest without being driven away by the noise of anxious cares. Then, in His own time, He will rise and say to the sea of your soul: “Peace! Be still!”

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.” (John 14:27)
