The joy that comes from God makes no noise; it brings rest to the heart.
The world seeks joy in things that change: praise, success, gain, and pleasure. Yet all these pass away like a shadow. Therefore, the one who anchors his heart in passing things will be lifted up one day and cast down the next.
The joy of the Holy Spirit has another character. It can dwell in a poor heart, a weary body, and even in the midst of trials. It is not nourished by circumstances but by nearness to God. The more a person empties himself of self-love, the more deeply this joy settles within his soul.
Do not seek powerful emotions in the spiritual life. Seek faithfulness, and joy will come in its proper time. It does not force itself upon the soul, but rests gently within it, like the morning light that drives away darkness without noise.
The one who has tasted this joy no longer runs endlessly after novelty. He discovers that God is enough, and that His presence fills the emptiness the world could never satisfy.
“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4)
