To Know Why You Die

“To know how to die means you understand why you die!” — Viktor Frankl

Frankl wrote these words after passing through the death camps, where he saw what happens to a man when death is placed before him without meaning. He observed a troubling thing: those who died fastest were not always the physically weakest, but those who no longer had anything to live for — and therefore nothing to die for either. A man can bear almost any suffering if he knows a “why”; but without it, even a small suffering can break him.

This thought, though it comes from a psychologist’s office, touches a mystery the Fathers had long known. Death, they say, is never merely a biological end; it is a passage, and a passage always carries either meaning or wandering. The man who does not know why he dies wanders even in the final moment of his life. The man who knows — even though death itself remains hard — passes through it as through a gate, not as through a blind wall.

The martyrs of the Church showed the world exactly this. They did not die because they felt no fear of death, but because they knew clearly for whom they were dying. Their fear of death was not removed through indifference, but through meaning: their death was no longer a senseless loss, but a witness, a union with Christ, an entrance into the life for which they had been made. This is precisely why they could look death in the face without collapsing — because, in dying, they understood exactly what they were doing, and why.

Here also lies the calling for the man of today: not to wait for the final hour to search for meaning, but to seek it now, while he can still choose what he lives for. He who lives without meaning will die without meaning — not because death robs him of it, but because he never truly had it. And he who, on the contrary, binds his life to Christ, binds his death to Him as well; and then death is no longer a nameless darkness, but an understood passage — awaited, even desired — because that man truly knows why he dies.
