The most spontaneous thing — the thief on the cross and unceasing prayer / Cel mai spontan lucru — tâlharul de pe cruce și rugăciunea neîncetată

What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done?

I won’t reach for a biographical episode. Scripture holds one truly spontaneous act, one that cannot be rehearsed or repeated: that of the good thief. A man at the last hour of his life, with no ascesis behind him, no fasting, no learned prayer — speaks a single sentence („Remember me, Lord, when You come into Your kingdom”) and receives the greatest answer any creature has ever received: „Today you will be with Me in paradise” (Luke 23:39–43).

St. John Chrysostom marvels not at the deed but at the speed of grace — it took not years, but an instant. Here lies the difference between spontaneity as psychological impulse (what Kahneman would call a „System 1” decision, fast and unreflective) and spontaneity as a response to grace — which is not a lack of thought but the maximal concentration of one’s whole being into a single glance. The thief doesn’t improvise a virtue; he recognizes instantly who is beside him.

And yet his sentence has a particular shape: short, monological, spoken from the depth of an extreme crisis. It is, in fact, the seed-form of the Jesus Prayer — „Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.” The difference between the thief and the one who practices unceasing prayer is not one of substance but of repetition: in the thief the cry appears once, out of nothing, as a last chance; in the hesychast, the same cry is spoken thousands of times, precisely so that one day it becomes, as the Philokalic fathers say, autoenergon — self-working, rising from the heart without effort of will, exactly in the moment it’s needed, not only when there’s time to prepare.

This is where it joins the theme of hidden preparation from the parable of the wise virgins, who kept oil ready for the unannounced coming of the Bridegroom (Matthew 25:1–13). Their concrete oil, for the ordinary man, is precisely unceasing prayer: the thief had no years of repeating it, but the Fathers say that this very practice would transform his singular, unrepeatable instant into a permanent state of watchfulness — would turn exception into rule, spontaneity into structure.

So when I ask myself what’s truly spontaneous in me, I find no past deed to be proud of — only a question for each day: if I don’t have the hesychast’s years of prayer, do I at least have this moment, spoken from the heart?
