The Wealth of a Poor Heart: Spiritual Poverty Explained

Only the heart that ceases to rely on the riches of this world can discover the riches of God.

Spiritual poverty does not mean the absence of gifts, but the awareness that apart from God we possess nothing as our own. The poor in spirit do not rely on their strength, knowledge, or possessions, but place all their hope in the Lord. For this very reason they are truly rich, because no one can take away their treasure.

The more a person gathers for himself, the more his heart risks being divided among many things. But when Christ is placed above all else, everything finds its proper place. He enjoys what has been given without becoming its slave, and if he loses it, he does not lose his peace.

Do not ask how much you possess, but to what your heart is attached. There are poor people who love wealth more than the rich, and there are wealthy people whose hearts remain free, using all they have for the glory of God and the good of their neighbor. True poverty and true riches begin in the heart.

Ask God for a simple heart that does not seek security in passing things. The one who has Christ as his treasure can live in want or in abundance without losing his freedom, because he knows that his true wealth is in heaven.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3)
