Labors in the Wind

Why do you desire so many and endless things, and labor in the wind, as Solomon says (Eccl. 5:15)? For your care shows itself to be foolish and without profit, since the reins of all things are held in the hand of God, and He guides and bears all things according to His will.

Behold the one who runs from morning until evening after advancement and elevation, thinking that through tireless labor he will establish his peace. One gathers wealth upon wealth, and houses upon houses; another chases the image he shows to the world, measuring his worth by those who watch him and by the praise given him. But the soul finds no rest either in gathering or in the praise of men, but only in Him who does not change and does not pass away.

Therefore, in vain you gather much, and in vain you strive to appear more than you are, for you do not know for whom you gather them, as David said (Ps. 38:10). A day will come, and you know not the hour, when all that was gathered — whether riches or renown — will pass into forgetting, and you will stand naked before Him who weighs not the deeds shown, but those hidden.

Do not fear, then, to leave the reins in the hand of God, for He cares for you better than you could care for yourself. Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and the rest will be added unto you. Then your labor will no longer be in the wind, but will bear fruit unto life everlasting.
