On yoga as a spiritual practice foreign to Christianity — a Hindu path dressed in a mantle of exercise

You have sensed rightly, brother/sister in Christ, the spirit of this question, for the Spirit of God grants discernment even to the one untrained in books, if his heart remains watchful. What the world today often calls “just movement” or “relaxation for body and mind” — yoga — is not, at its root, a mere soulless gymnastics, but a whole spiritual path, born of Hindu belief, dressed today, in many places of the West, in the respectable garment of health and inner balance. The names of the exercises have remained unchanged, but many no longer know the work within that they carry.

What yoga actually is, beyond the bodily exercise

Let us not stop at bare condemnation, but show clearly what this thing is, so that the unknowing may understand why the Church calls for watchfulness.

Yoga, in its first and full meaning, is not a list of movements chosen for the health of the spine or the calming of the nerves, but a whole path toward the union of the individual soul (atman) with the impersonal universal principle (Brahman) — a union that presupposes the gradual erasing of the boundaries between man’s self and the impersonal divinity of all that exists. The bodily postures (asanas), the breathing techniques (pranayama), the silence and fixing of the mind (dhyana, dharana) are not ends in themselves, but preparatory steps toward this union, as shown in the classical writings of this path. The word “yoga” itself means “union” or “yoke” — a yoke placed on the soul that seeks to merge, not to meet in love a personal God, as Christianity teaches us, but to dissolve into an inability to any longer distinguish the self from the whole.

Many practices today retain the bodily forms, seemingly stripped of Hindu doctrine, so as to be more easily received in the Western world — but even so, the exercises carry within them an order and an intention that are not neutral: the repetition of sacred words (mantras), positions and gestures of the hands (mudras) with ritual meaning, salutations to the sun or to various forms of Hindu divinity, together with a philosophy of self-attained salvation, without repentance, without grace, without Christ.

The first distinction: salvation through self, not through grace

Christianity confesses plainly that man is not saved by his own power, however refined through exercise and discipline, but by the grace of God, received through faith and through the Sacraments: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). Yoga, on the contrary, at its root, is a path of salvation through one’s own effort, through the technique of body and mind, without need of a personal Savior — a path which, however well-intentioned, stands opposed to the very foundation of the Gospel.

The second distinction: emptying the mind, not filling it with Christ

Christian prayer, even the deepest, silent, hesychastic prayer, never seeks the emptying of the mind of all content, but the filling of it with the unceasing remembrance of Christ — as the Holy Fathers of the Jesus Prayer teach us. Saint Ignatius Brianchaninov, writing precisely on the danger of mixing techniques of Eastern meditation with Christian prayer, warns that the emptying of the mind, without the guarding of Christ’s name, opens the soul not toward God, but toward an unclear, perilous state, in which man may easily be deceived by imaginings or by foreign workings, mistaking them for spiritual peace.

The third distinction: the body as a vessel of subdued passions, not as an instrument of cosmic union

Christianity honors the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), subjected to asceticism for the cutting off of the passions and for its preparation for resurrection — not as an instrument through which a higher, self-standing state of consciousness might be attained. Fasting, prostrations, and the Church’s vigil have a clear purpose — the humbling of the body toward the clarifying of the mind for prayer and repentance — not an “awakening” of an inner energy (kundalini) or an experience of cosmic merging, as full yogic practice pursues.

What remains for us

For the one who wonders about this matter, there is no need for argument, but a simple step: to distinguish clearly between bodily movement taken as mere exercise and the whole spiritual path that yoga carries at its root, especially when practiced with meditation, with mantras, or with its own teaching on salvation; to seek the stillness of body and mind through the means appointed by the Church — fasting, prostrations, the prayer of the heart, silence before the icon — which carry within them not mere technique, but a living encounter with a personal God, Who calls us to Himself in love, not to dissolution into an undifferentiated whole.

“Search the Scriptures… and it is they that bear witness about Me” (John 5:39) — and any path that promises peace and union without Christ, however ancient and refined, remains a path foreign to the Truth given to us through the Incarnation, Crucifixion, and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

On the deception of therapeutic cults with charismatic leaders — total bondage dressed in a mantle of healing community

You have sensed rightly, brother/sister in Christ, the spirit of this error, for the Spirit of God grants discernment even to the one untrained in books, if his heart remains watchful. What the world today calls “therapeutic community” or “chosen family” — groups that blend group psychotherapy with their own spiritual doctrine, under a charismatic leader, gradually isolating members from family and friends — is nothing other than the old total bondage of the soul under a foreign dominion, now dressed in the respectable garment of shared healing and belonging. The name has changed, but the work within remains the same, and here, more than in the other errors shown thus far, the bondage reaches its full measure, encompassing the whole of a person’s life.

How this deception actually operates

Let us not stop at bare condemnation, but show clearly the face of this error, so that the unknowing may recognize it when they meet it.

Such a group is usually born around a man gifted with fine speech and a bearing that inspires trust — a “leader” who appears at first as a loving father, attentive to every wound of the newcomer, ready to listen as no one else ever has. Little by little, this closeness turns into dominion: the leader becomes the sole interpreter of truth, the only voice worth heeding, and any doubt of the member is named “resistance,” “unresolved trauma,” or “the working of your old programming.” The group’s doctrine mixes psychological language with spiritual teachings invented by the leader himself, grounded neither in science nor in the tradition of the Church — a teaching shaped to the leader’s own nature, not to the truth.

Ties from outside are cut gradually, under gentle-sounding words at first: “your family doesn’t understand you yet,” “your old friends pull you back into your old suffering,” “only we truly see you” — until the person has no other support left but the group itself. Large sums of money are often demanded, under various names — “participation fee,” “investment in healing,” “contribution to the community” — and a swift, total, definitive healing is promised, one that no ordinary remedy could give so quickly. Critical thinking is discouraged directly: asking questions, reading opposing views, listening to anyone from outside is named “poisoning the mind” or “sabotaging your own growth.” And if someone brings forward scientific evidence or a contrary testimony, it is dismissed beforehand, without examination, as “limited” or “hostile” — because the truth of these groups cannot stand if examined with a sober mind.

The first deception: the leader placed in the seat of Christ and of the Church

The Holy Apostle Paul foretold plainly just such a time: “From among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them” (Acts 20:30). The true Church does not gather around a single man who makes himself the source of truth, but around Christ, confessed by the conciliar witness of the Holy Fathers, by the Holy Councils, by an order that does not depend on the passing nature of one soul. Whoever demands total obedience to himself, without being sent by any authority higher than himself, without answering for his deeds before anyone, does not build up the Church — he builds himself up in her place.

The second deception: severance from family under the name of healing

The fifth commandment is set aside by no “healing”: “Honor your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12) remains an unchanged commandment, even when family ties bear real wounds that need healing. The Lord Himself rebuked those who, under pious words, cast aside care for their parents (Mark 7:9-13). The healing of family wounds is worked through forgiveness and wisdom, not through the total severing of those who, with all their weaknesses, remain bound to us by divine commandment.

The third deception: swift healing in place of long patience

The Holy Fathers teach us that the healing of the soul does not come swiftly, nor fully, in this present life, but through a long struggle, with rises and falls, under the humble guidance of a tried elder — not of a master who promises perfection within a few months of “program.” Saint Isaac the Syrian writes that patience in trial works more healing than any haste, however well dressed in words of love.

What remains for us

For the one drawn toward such a community, there is no need for argument, but a simple step: to examine whether the one guiding him allows questions, doubts, and unbroken contact with family and with his former spiritual father; to keep away from any group that demands large sums of money and promises total, swift healing; to remember that Christ severs no one from those whom God has appointed for him to love, but heals precisely these bonds, through forgiveness and patience, not through their breaking.

“Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation” (Matthew 26:41) — and above all let the one seeking healing watch closely, lest, fleeing one suffering, he fall into a greater bondage, under a master who wears the face of gentleness, but holds in his hand, in secret, the reins of his whole life.

On the deception of paid, disordered “deliverance ministries” — fear dressed in a mantle of exorcism

You have sensed rightly, brother/sister in Christ, the spirit of this error, for the Spirit of God grants discernment even to the one untrained in books, if his heart remains watchful. What the world today calls “demonic deliverance therapy” or “deliverance ministries” — practiced sometimes even within settings that call themselves “religious,” exploiting the fear and guilt of the sufferer — is nothing other than the old dominion of fear over a weakened soul, now dressed in the respectable garment of spiritual warfare. The name has changed, but the work within remains the same — and it must be said plainly that we speak here not of the work appointed by the Church, through an ordained priest, under obedience and with humility, but of its corrupted image, seized by the uncalled.

How this deception actually operates

Let us not stop at bare condemnation, but show clearly the face of this error, so that the unknowing may recognize it when they meet it.

The one who calls himself a “deliverer” or “spiritual warrior” most often awaits no ordination, no obedience to a bishop, no order of the Church — he takes up the office himself, or receives it from an assembly that feeds on its own error. He seeks in every suffering the sign of an unclean spirit: an unhealed illness, an unconquered passion, an old wound of the soul are at once named “demonic activity,” without examination, without time for prayer and fasting, without the counsel of a tried spiritual father. The session is often held in public, with cries and tremors put forward as proof of the “struggle,” and the sufferer is made to believe that all his suffering comes from a foreign spirit, never from his own passion or from a lack of repentance.

Confession of the most hidden sins is then demanded, before the crowd — not toward sacramental forgiveness, but to feed the fear: “if you do not confess everything, the spirit remains.” Whoever does not feel the expected “release” is accused of not having had enough faith, or of still hiding an unconfessed sin — a double guilt, laid upon the shoulders of one already crushed by suffering. And the payment demanded for such “sessions,” or the repeated return to the same “deliverer,” shows plainly that the aim is not the salvation of the soul, but the keeping of the deceived one in fear and dependence.

The first deception: working without sending and without obedience

Even the Lord’s own disciples, upon finding a man casting out demons in the name of Jesus without following them, wished to stop him — but the Lord answered gently: “Do not stop him… whoever is not against us is for us” (Mark 9:39-40). Yet the Acts of the Apostles shows us the other face as well: the sons of Sceva, a Jewish priest, attempted to cast out demons by invoking “the Jesus whom Paul proclaims,” without themselves having any living bond with Christ — and the evil spirit answered them: “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?” and threw itself upon them, wounding them (Acts 19:13-16). Whoever approaches the struggle with spirits without purity of life, without obedience to the Church, without humility, exposes himself to danger, not deliverance — and the one he claims to heal is placed in that same danger alongside him.

The second deception: fear placed in the seat of humble repentance

The Church has appointed prayers of exorcism — the Prayers of Saint Basil the Great — but these are read by a priest, with humility and long-suffering, not as spectacle, not as proof of personal power, not with haste and outcry. Saint John Cassian writes plainly that the true struggle against the spirits of wickedness is fought first through humility and through knowledge of one’s own weakness, and whoever believes himself strong against demons by his own power, without grace, often himself falls prey to pride — the widest door of deception.

Saint John Climacus teaches us that fear without hope does not come from God, but from the enemy, who uses terror precisely to prevent the soul from drawing near to Christ with the trust of a son, not of a frightened slave.

The third deception: guilt without forgiveness

The deepest wound of this corrupted practice is that it leaves the sufferer in a state of endless guilt — for if the “deliverance” does not come, the fault falls always on him, never on the disorder of the one “serving” him. But Christ did not come to bind souls with endless fear, but to loose them: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… to proclaim liberty to the captives” (Luke 4:18). Where there is endless fear and guilt without forgiveness, that work cannot be Christ’s, however many holy words it bears upon its lips.

What remains for us

For the one troubled by such suffering, there is no need for argument, but a simple step: to go to the spiritual father appointed by the Church, under obedience and with long-suffering, not to an unsent “deliverer”; to avoid any practice conducted in public, with pressure and haste; to remember that true spiritual struggle is fought through fasting, prayer, and the Holy Sacraments, over a long time, not in a single paid session, under the spotlight.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you” (James 4:7-8) — and this drawing near is made with humility, long-suffering, and obedience, not with fear stirred up by one who uses another’s suffering for his own exaltation.

A treia amăgire: vinovăția fără iertare

On the deception of the horoscope and the zodiac signs — bondage to the stars dressed in a mantle of life guidance

You have sensed rightly, brother/sister in Christ, the spirit of this error, for the Spirit of God grants discernment even to the one untrained in books, if his heart remains watchful. What the world today calls “horoscope” or “zodiac compatibility” — the daily reading of the stars to decide love, friendship, career, even the right moment for a decision — is nothing other than the old worship of the stars, condemned already in the Old Law, now dressed in the respectable garment of popular psychology and “self-knowledge.” The name has changed, but the work within remains the same, and its corrupting fruits are seen today in the most delicate areas of human life — relationships and the foundational decisions of existence.

How this deception actually operates

Let us not stop at bare condemnation, but show clearly the face of this error, so that the unknowing may recognize it when they meet it.

Today’s astrology creeps in not through fear, but through seemingly innocent play: “what’s your sign?”, “are we compatible?”, “what does the horoscope say today?” — questions often spoken in laughter, but which, gradually, take on the weight of unwritten law. Young people come to reject a good relationship simply because “the signs don’t match,” or to remain in a harmful relationship because the astrologer said it was “their karma” to meet. Days are chosen for a wedding, for starting a business, for a move, not through prayer and wise counsel, but according to the position of the planets. Man’s very nature is shut into twelve boxes — “you’re a Leo, so you’re proud,” “you’re a Pisces, so you’re a dreamer” — and man comes, without noticing, to explain his passions not through struggle and repentance, but through the star under which he was born, as though he were exempted from responsibility for his fallen nature.

The bitterest fruit of this error is seen precisely where the Lord has appointed man’s greatest freedom: the choice of the one with whom he weaves his life, the decisions that shape his path. How many have abandoned a pure friendship, a blessed marriage, a well-considered decision, simply because “the stars did not show it” or “today’s horoscope advised otherwise”? Thus, instead of growing in wisdom and self-knowledge through struggle, prayer, and the counsel of loved ones, man becomes a slave to a printed calendar, which speaks to him daily with the voice of an oracle, yet bears no responsibility whatsoever for his soul.

The first deception: reading in the stars what God has left hidden or free

The Book of Deuteronomy plainly condemns whoever “practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens” (Deuteronomy 18:10), and the Prophet Isaiah mocks those who trust in “the astrologers, the stargazers” (Isaiah 47:13), showing that these cannot deliver anyone from what is to come. The stars were made by God “for signs and for seasons, and for days and years” (Genesis 1:14) — that is, for the natural order of the world, not to determine the fate or the nature of the human soul, which is the image of God, not the slave of a soulless, judgment-less heavenly matter.

The second deception: casting aside freedom for bondage to a wordless script

Man was made free, after the image of God, able to choose the good through struggle and through grace, not written beforehand into a fate sealed at birth by the position of the planets. Saint John of Damascus, writing against the astrologers of his day, shows that to regard man’s nature and deeds as the fruit of the stars is to utterly destroy his moral responsibility — and where there is no responsibility, there can be neither repentance nor true virtue, but only a false resignation: “so it is written for me.”

The third deception: a relationship built on the compatibility of signs, not on love and sacrifice

Christian love is not measured by the matching of two zodiac signs, but is built through patience, forgiveness, and long self-sacrifice — “love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:7). Whoever seeks first in the stars the sign of a match is seeking, without knowing it, an easier path than the one appointed by God — he wants a guarantee beforehand, not a bond built through labor and grace, day by day, between two free persons.

What remains for us

For the one tempted by such a habit, there is no need for argument, but a simple step: never to leave any foundational decision of life — a relationship, a marriage, a change of path — in the hands of a horoscope read in the morning, but to examine it with prayer, with the counsel of a spiritual father and of loved ones, with a sober mind; to remember that his nature is sealed by no star, but can be changed, through grace, from any passion toward any virtue; to seek in the heavens not the message of the day, but the glory of God, Who “calls all the stars by name” (Isaiah 40:26) and holds them all under His dominion.

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21) — and whoever surrenders his life, his love, and his decisions into the hands of mute stars, instead of struggling with patience and grace toward the true good, has traded the freedom of a son of God for an ancient bondage, dressed today in the garment of an innocent game on his phone.

On the deception of “spiritual coaching” that demands payment for abundance — greed dressed in a mantle of spiritual teaching

You have sensed rightly, brother/sister in Christ, the spirit of this error, for the Spirit of God grants discernment even to the one untrained in books, if his heart remains watchful. What the world today calls “spiritual coaching” or “abundance mentorship” — a “guru” who blends motivation, New Age spirituality, and financial pressure, demanding “investment in yourself” to “unlock the abundance of the universe” — is nothing other than the old greed that feeds on souls weakened by need, now dressed in the respectable garment of spiritual teaching and personal fulfillment. The name has changed, but the work within remains the same.

How this deception actually operates

Let us not stop at bare condemnation, but show clearly the face of this error, so that the unknowing may recognize it when they meet it.

The “abundance mentor” first displays himself through his visible prosperity — large houses, expensive travels, testimonies from “disciples” claiming their lives have been transformed — and urges the listener to believe that this prosperity is the sign of a “universal law” that he alone knows and can teach onward, for a fee. His teaching is at once simple and flattering: present poverty or hardship comes not from passion, from laziness, or from circumstance, but from a “blocked mind” or a “low vibration” — and the remedy is not repentance or honest labor, but payment for a course, a session, an “initiation” that will supposedly unlock an unseen flow of wealth reserved for those who believe enough.

And to the one who lacks money enough for “investment,” he is told that his very reluctance to pay is the sign of the “poverty mindset” that must be overcome — so that the person comes to borrow, to fall into debt, to sell what he has, believing he is performing an act of faith, when in truth he is feeding another’s greed with his own poverty. And if the promised prosperity does not come, the fault never falls upon the teaching, but upon the one who did not believe enough, did not “vibrate” high enough, or has not yet invested enough — so that the deceived one is kept forever one step from the “breakthrough” that never comes, except through the next payment.

The first deception: greed called a “spiritual law”

The Holy Apostle Paul names this plainly: “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires… For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils” (1 Timothy 6:9-10). There exists in Scripture no “law of abundance” that makes payment to a man the wealth of the poor — there exists only the lying promise of one who uses spiritual words to fill his own purse from another’s need. And the Lord told us plainly: “You cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24) — whoever binds the service of God to financial investment serves, in secret, only the latter.

The second deception: blame placed on the poor, to justify the rich

The Holy Fathers teach us that poverty and wealth are not signs of God’s pleasure or displeasure, but trials alike, through which man reveals his virtue or his passion. Saint John Chrysostom, who sharply rebuked the rich who imagined their wealth to be the reward of their virtue, writes that often the poor man stands nearer to the Kingdom than the rich, and to tell the destitute that his poverty comes from “low vibration” or a “blocked mind” is a mockery of his suffering, not a teaching. Christ Himself praised the widow who gave two small coins out of her poverty (Mark 12:41-44), not the one who gives much from his abundance in order to receive back, with interest, a promised “abundance.”

The third deception: the guru in the place of grace

The most cunning aspect of this error is that it shifts the source of every good thing away from the grace of God toward the skill and word of a man — as though the good in someone’s life came not from the mercy of the Creator, but from a technique learned from a paid “master.” Saint Isaac the Syrian teaches that the true wealth of the soul lies in thanksgiving to God for what has been given, not in the unceasing chase after more, fed by a promise that never fully comes true, precisely so that the deceived one keeps returning to the paid source.

What remains for us

For the one tempted by such a teaching, there is no need for argument, but a simple step: to examine carefully anyone who demands money in the name of a “spiritual law,” remembering that the truth of God is given freely, not sold; to seek the increase of his goods through honest labor and the blessing of God, not through the “unlocking” of some unseen energy; to remember that gratitude for little is greater wealth than the insatiable chase after much.

“But godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6) — and whoever feeds on another’s discontent, promising him a wealth that only payment to himself can unlock, does not proclaim the word of God, but his own greed, dressed in beautiful words.

On the spirit of the final deception — many faces of the same enemy

You have asked, brother/sister in Christ, for a word that might gather together all these errors examined thus far, for it is a wise thing to see not only each face separately, but also the thread that binds them all, so that we may no longer be deceived by any of them, however many new names they take upon themselves from now on.

One enemy, many masks

We have examined in turn: energy therapies that manipulate nameless powers; personal development groups that enslave under the name of freedom; past-life regression that seeks behind what God has hidden; the casting aside of medicine under the word of faith; the spiritual coach who sells abundance; “demonic deliverances” without order and without a priest; therapeutic cults with leaders who take the place of Christ; yoga, a Hindu path dressed as exercise; the horoscope, which binds man’s freedom to the movement of mute stars. Nine faces, nine names, nine marketplaces — but examined with attention, all bear the same seal, for the enemy of souls has but few tools, which he ever dresses anew in garments fitted to the age in which he works.

The Holy Apostle Paul made this plain long ago: “No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). The enemy does not appear with horns and fire, but with a warm smile, with practiced words, with the promise of swift healing — and it is precisely this false light that is his surest sign, for empty darkness deceives no one, but false light deceives many.

The four seals of every deception

Beyond the variety of names, all these errors bear four seals, by which they may be known, wherever they arise, under whatever new name they take upon themselves henceforth.

The first seal: healing without repentance. All promise the soothing of suffering without the tears of inner change — whether through energy, through “released” karma, through faith without medicine, through submission to a guru, through hasty exorcism, through a community that replaces the Church, through asanas, or through the stars. But the Baptist cried out plainly: “Bear fruits worthy of repentance” (Matthew 3:8) — there is no healing without this painful and free turning of the heart toward God, and whoever promises otherwise lies.

The second seal: knowledge without humility. All demand unquestioning submission — to the stars, to the energy, to the leader, to the “law of abundance” — discouraging question, doubt, examination. But the Holy Fathers taught us that the good spirit never fears questioning, for truth endures examination; only falsehood needs darkness and haste to escape discovery.

The third seal: the bond severed instead of healed. All, in one way or another, remove man from those whom God has appointed for him to love — from family, from the Church, from his appointed spiritual father, from his own sober judgment — so as to bind him more fully to themselves. But Christ binds and heals; He does not sever and isolate: “What God has joined together, let not man separate” (Matthew 19:6) — words spoken first of marriage, but valid for every bond that grace has sanctified.

The fourth seal: payment instead of gift. All demand a high price for what God gives freely. The Lord told His disciples: “You received without paying; give without pay” (Matthew 10:8). Wherever grace is sold, there grace no longer exists, but merchandise — and whoever buys it acquires not salvation, but only a new debt, forever unpaid.

Why the deception succeeds

These errors succeed not through their own power, but through man’s genuine hunger — hunger for healing, for meaning, for belonging, for a hand to lift him out of suffering. Saint Macarius the Egyptian writes that the soul, being made for God, finds rest in nothing else, and therefore runs, even mistakenly, toward whatever promises it the peace it has lost. The fault does not lie only with the one who deceives, but also in the void left wherever the Church has failed to answer, with living warmth, the real suffering of the one who went seeking it elsewhere.

What remains for us, in the end

We need no great argument to guard ourselves against all these things, but one steadfast thing alone: the unceasing return to Christ crucified and risen, the only One in Whom the whole hunger of the human soul finds its fulfillment. Where He is, there is healing with repentance, knowledge with humility, bonds joined with love but without payment. Wherever any of these signs is missing, there — however beautifully the word may sound, however new the name may be — a foreign spirit is at work.

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1). This testing requires not much learning, but only a watchful heart, grounded in prayer, in the Sacraments, and in humble obedience to the Church of Christ — the one ship that does not sink in the vast sea of this age’s deceptions.

A doua pecete: cunoașterea fără smerenie. Toate cer supunere neîntrebătoare — a stelelor, a energiei, a liderului, a „legii abundenței” — descurajând întrebarea, îndoiala, cercetarea.

On the deception of “past life regression” — witchcraft dressed in a mantle of psychological healing

You have sensed rightly, brother/sister in Christ, the spirit of this error, for the Spirit of God grants discernment even to the one untrained in books, if his heart remains watchful. What the world today calls “past life therapy” or “karmic deprogramming” — hypnotic regression into “past lives,” “release from karma,” “curse cleansing” — is nothing other than the old seeking of hidden things through forbidden means, now dressed in the respectable garment of psychology and self-knowledge. The name has changed, but the work within remains the same.

How this deception actually operates

Let us not stop at bare condemnation, but show clearly the face of this error, so that the unknowing may recognize it when they meet it.

The “past-life therapist” calls himself a “certified practitioner of hypnotic regression” — a certification given, as in the other cases, not by any recognized authority of science or of the spirit, but by other practitioners of the same teaching. The person is brought into a state of deep relaxation, near sleep, in which the mind’s watchfulness of judgment weakens, and he is asked to “see” images, to “feel” places and faces, which the therapist then interprets as memories from lives before his birth — a harsh father in this life becomes “an enemy from a past life,” an illness today becomes “the karma of a deed long ago,” an unexplained fear becomes “a curse inherited from the family line.” The price of such a session is high, and the one who has paid once returns again and again, for each session opens a new “memory,” which demands clarification, which demands another payment.

Nothing that is “seen” in this state can be examined or proven — it is neither historical fact nor verifiable testimony, but an imagining of the weakened mind, to which is sometimes added a foreign working that uses man’s state of unwatchfulness to deceive him more deeply still. And the interpretation is always made by the therapist, who decides what the images seen mean, thus attributing to a “past life” what is, in truth, a wound or a passion of this present life — and so the person is prevented from knowing the true root of his suffering and from repenting of it.

The first deception: seeking hidden things through forbidden means

The Law of the Old Testament clearly forbids any seeking of hidden things through incantation, divination, or the calling up of the dead: “There shall not be found among you… anyone who practices divination, or tells fortunes, or interprets omens… or a medium, or a necromancer” (Deuteronomy 18:10-11). Hypnotic regression, however it may call itself “therapy,” is still a seeking of hidden things — not through prayer and repentance before God, Who alone knows the secrets of the heart, but through a trance state in which man loses the watchfulness of his mind and opens himself to “visions” he cannot examine with a sober judgment.

Saint Basil the Great teaches that the soul of man, created once by God at his birth, carries within it no memories of a prior existence — for the Church has never received the teaching of reincarnation, but confesses plainly: “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). Whoever seeks “past lives” is, in truth, seeking an answer the Church cannot sanction, for its foundation is foreign to the Truth given to us by Christ.

The second deception: karma in the place of repentance

The teaching of “karma” shifts the responsibility for man’s suffering from one place to another, without man ever being able to be healed through free repentance — for if today’s illness or trouble is the “payment” of a deed from a life he does not remember, he cannot repent of it, but can only keep on paying, through sessions and rituals of “cleansing.” This is a heavier bondage than the one it claims to heal, for it binds man to an endless debt with no forgiveness.

But the Gospel proclaims exactly the opposite: that Christ took upon Himself the whole of our debt, once for all, upon the Cross — “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree” (1 Peter 2:24) — and that forgiveness is not earned through payment or ritual, but received through repentance and faith. Whoever seeks “release from karma” through a paid session is seeking, without knowing it, a salvation without Christ — and no such salvation exists.

The third deception: the “curse” as a substitute for the unconfessed passion

Often, what is called an “inherited curse” is, in fact, an unfaced passion, an unconfessed wound, a sinful habit passed from parents to children not through any spell, but through example and through lack of repentance. The Holy Fathers do indeed speak of the consequences of the sins of forebears upon their descendants — but the remedy appointed by the Church for this is prayer, fasting, confession, and the Holy Sacraments, not hypnotic regression and “energetic cleansing” paid for at a high price.

What remains for us

For the one tempted by such a calling, there is no need for argument, but a simple step: to allow no one to weaken the watchfulness of his mind through trance states in search of “discovering” hidden things; to bring to his spiritual father, not to a paid practitioner, any unexplained fear or burden felt as inherited; to remember that the only “past life” the Church confesses is this present life, given once, for repentance and salvation.

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God” (Deuteronomy 29:29) — it is not given to us to wrest by force the mysteries God has kept hidden, but to be content with what He has revealed for our salvation: repentance, the Cross, and the Resurrection of Christ.

On the deception of cult-like groups disguised as “personal development” — bondage dressed in a mantle of liberation

You have sensed rightly, brother/sister in Christ, the spirit of this error, for the Spirit of God grants discernment even to the one untrained in books, if his heart remains watchful. What the world today calls “intensive personal development” — multi-day programs, “transformation trainings,” “consciousness intensives” — is nothing other than the old bondage of the soul submitted to a master, now dressed in the respectable garment of freedom and self-fulfillment. The name has changed, but the work within remains the same.

How this deception actually operates

Let us not stop at bare condemnation, but show clearly the face of this error, so that the unknowing may recognize it when they meet it.

Such programs — known historically through examples that have collapsed under the courts of this world for the harm done to those deceived — always begin with a flattering promise: “you are blocked by a wound from the past, and we will free you in a few days from what years of therapy could not.” The person, worn down by suffering, is brought into a closed room, with an exhausting schedule, without sufficient sleep, without food at proper times — the body is weakened on purpose, for a tired mind bends more easily. He is asked to confess, before strangers, his deepest wounds, his most hidden shames — not toward healing, but toward being bound: the one who has shown his nakedness before the crowd becomes easier to control, whether through fear of shame or through false gratitude toward those who “accepted him as he is.”

Then comes the pressure of the group: whoever doubts or wishes to leave is put to shame before all, called “resistant,” “not ready to grow,” “a prisoner of your old story” — and the crowd around him, already bound, pushes him back into the circle, for each newly bound member strengthens the bondage of those before him. Next comes the severing of outside ties — family, friends, spiritual father — labeled “toxic relationships” or “voices of your old identity,” so that the only voice remaining is that of the leader and the group. And at the end, the one “transformed” is called to bring in others, to pay for ever-higher levels of “initiation,” for this chain feeds on nothing but fresh flesh.

This is precisely the structure of the old spiritual bondage — isolation, exhaustion, confession without sacrament, dependence on a master — only moved out of the false elder’s cell and into the conference hall.

The first deception: confession without sacrament and without a priest

Holy Scripture teaches us that confession of sins takes place before God, through the mediation of a priest ordained for this purpose, under the seal of the sacrament: “Confess your sins to one another… that you may be healed” (James 5:16) — but this confession is made in a spirit of humility and love, not in the marketplace, toward humiliation. Whoever forces you to cry out your wounds before strangers, without sacrament, without sacramental forgiveness, does not heal you — he strips you bare, so as to bind you more easily.

Saint John Cassian writes of the danger of confession made to the wrong ear: not every ear is worthy to receive the secret of a man’s heart, for the unprepared listener may wound more deeply than the first wound. How much less, then, a room full of strangers, themselves under the very same pressure.

The second deception: bondage under the appearance of freedom

The Apostle Paul warns us: “You were called to freedom… only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” (Galatians 5:13). Whoever submits to a program that demands he sever ties with those who have loved him from the beginning — parents, spouse, friends, the Church — so as to remain only with the “new family” of the group, that one is not free, but has merely exchanged one chain for another, more hidden and harder to recognize, for it bears the name of freedom.

Our Lord Jesus Christ never tore anyone away from mother and brothers to serve Him only out of fear or pressure — He called instead: “Come and see” (John 1:46), leaving the heart’s freedom entirely intact. Whoever demands blind obedience and isolation from loved ones, under threat of shame, does not work after the likeness of Christ, but after the likeness of the powers of this age.

The third deception: the leader in the place of Christ

The most cunning aspect of this error is that, gradually, the program’s leader comes to occupy the place that belongs to God alone: the one to whom you bare your soul, on whose approval your worth depends, whose words become law for your life. Saint John Climacus teaches that true obedience is given to a tried and tested spiritual guide, under the blessing of the Church, for the cutting off of one’s own passionate will — not to a paid stranger who demands complete obedience after only a few days’ acquaintance, and who answers to no one for your soul.

What remains for us

For the one tempted by such a calling, there is no need for argument, but a simple step: never to be severed from one’s spiritual father, family, and Church under the pretext of “personal growth”; to examine whether the one guiding him is willing to answer questions and doubts, or punishes them with shame; to remember that the true healing of the soul is not gained in a few days of pressure, but through a whole life of repentance, prayer, and humble love.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7) — and wherever fear of leaving reigns, shame at doubting, and bondage under the name of freedom, there is not the Spirit of God, but a foreign spirit, seeking to dominate, not to liberate.

A doua amăgire: robia sub chipul libertății

On the deception called “energy therapy” witchcraft dressed in a mantle of science

You have sensed rightly, brother/sister in Christ, the spirit of this error, for the Spirit of God grants discernment even to the one untrained in books, if his heart remains watchful. What the world today calls “energy therapy” — Reiki, “quantum healing,” “energy recalibration,” crystal therapy — is nothing other than the old witchcraft of manipulating unseen powers, now dressed in the respectable garment of science and wellness. The name has changed, but the work within remains the same.

How this deception actually operates

Let us not stop at bare condemnation, but show clearly the face of this error, so that the unknowing may recognize it when they meet it.

The “energy healer” calls himself “certified” or “attuned” — a certification given not by any spiritual authority, but by other practitioners of the same teaching, in a closed circle that feeds on itself. The session is paid for, like any commercial service, and follows a pattern nearly identical to the sorcery of old, only the tools have changed: instead of incantation, “channeling” a nameless, faceless energy — “universal energy,” “quantum energy,” “the vibration of the universe” — words found nowhere in Scripture and serving no commandment of God, but rather the desires of the paying client: health without repentance, peace without the cross, harmony without struggle against the passions.

To this is added an entire pseudo-scientific apparatus meant to inspire confidence: the word “quantum,” borrowed from physics and emptied entirely of its true meaning, lending an appearance of rigor to a practice that has nothing to do with science; “energy fields” claimed to be measurable yet proven by no instrument; stones and crystals to which are attributed powers of “balancing” the soul, as though grace could be stored in a rock, the way idols of old bore imagined powers. All of these are old techniques of witchcraft, merely reclothed in therapeutic language, so as to appear self-care rather than the summoning of spirits.

And the doctrine behind the practice is as foreign to Truth as its methods: that man has no sin, only “energy blockages”; that the body is a circuit board to be “repaired” without repentance and without confession; that any soul, regardless of faith or manner of life, can receive “healing” merely by paying for a session and by the laying on of hands. This is precisely the structure of the old witchcraft — payment, ritual, a power summoned on command — only moved out of the sorcerer’s hut and into the “wellness” studio.

The first deception: power sought without the Church’s sending

The Holy Fathers teach us that not every power that is felt or that manifests comes from God. Saint Anthony the Great, often tempted by spirits who appeared to him in luminous form and brought feelings of peace and comfort, left his followers the most useful law of the spiritual life: never trust the good feeling, never trust the peace that comes without struggle, but always ask: “Who are you, and whence do you come?” And if that power is troubled by the sign of the Cross or the invocation of the Name of Jesus, then the wolf is unmasked beneath the sheep’s clothing.

The Acts of the Apostles shows us this deception in plain sight: Simon of Samaria, who practiced sorcery and amazed the people with powers he called “the great power of God” (Acts 8:9-10), later wanted to buy the gift of the Holy Spirit with silver, believing that grace could be acquired like merchandise, through payment and technique. Saint Peter answered him sharply: may your silver perish with you, for you thought the gift of God could be obtained with money (Acts 8:20). This is precisely the root of “energy therapy”: the belief that a spiritual power can be bought, learned, certified, and transmitted through technique, without purification of the soul, without repentance, without being sent by God.

The second deception: trust placed in a power, not in its Giver

The Apostle Paul calls us to vigilance: our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against the spirits of wickedness (Ephesians 6:12). Whoever allows himself to be “worked on” by a nameless energy, without knowing who or what is acting upon his body and soul, willingly places himself under a dominion he cannot judge. True healing does not come from an anonymous, universal force, available to anyone without worthiness — it comes from God, through grace, through prayer, through the Sacraments, and it asks of man humility, not mere openness.

The third deception: comfort without repentance

The most cunning aspect of this modern error is that it offers comfort without the cross, healing without tears, balance without struggle against the passions — “you are fine as you are, your energy is simply blocked,” it says, without any call to repentance. But true comfort always comes after the tears of repentance, never in its place. Saint John Climacus writes that demons often slip in under the guise of “comfort” precisely to lull the fear of God and the soul’s watchfulness to sleep.

What remains for us

For the one tempted by such a calling, there is no need for argument, but a simple step: to tell one’s spiritual father what was heard or felt, to open the Psalter and read a Psalm of repentance, to say the Jesus Prayer — “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner” — and to remember that healing of soul and body is not bought with sessions and certificates, but is sought with a broken heart from the one Physician of souls and bodies.

“But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed!” (Galatians 1:9) — not as a curse cast upon the one who has wandered, but as a watch set over the Truth, lest we lose it because of a beautiful name borne by a foreign work.

A treia amăgire: mângâiere fără pocăință

Erasing a trend

If you could erase one trend from history, what would it be?

The most harmful trend in history is the habit of polishing falsehood until it shines.

When a man is wounded, he hides behind elegant words.

When he strays, he blames the times.

When he fears the truth, he calls his fear “freedom.”

If I could erase one trend, I would erase the human tendency to decorate lies until they look harmless.

Because nothing weakens the soul more than the refusal to stand face‑to‑face with itself.

Truth needs no fashion.

Only a heart unafraid of light.

Prezența care nu cere cuvinte / The Presence That Needs No Words

RO

EN

I reached this thought in a moment when the mind could no longer keep pace with the evidence that revealed itself.

It wasn’t a new idea, but an ancient touch coming from the place where truth is not built, but unveiled.

There, the word no longer explains — it bows.

There are moments when you no longer seek meaning, but meaning reaches you.

It doesn’t come through argument or demonstration, but through a light that offers no justification, only presence.

Then the mind stops, not because it is defeated, but because it meets something older than itself.

An origin that does not ask to be explained, but received.

And what is received is not a concept, but a presence.

A presence that cannot be analyzed, only listened to.

Before it, the word no longer constructs — it bows.

Because some truths are not thought — they are recognized.

On the deception called “angel therapy” witchcraft dressed in a mantle of light

You have sensed rightly, brother/sister in Christ, the spirit of this error, for the Spirit of God grants discernment even to the one untrained in books, if his heart remains watchful. What the world today calls “angel therapy” is nothing other than the old witchcraft of summoning spirits, now dressed in the respectable garment of psychology and self-healing. The name has changed, but the work within remains the same.

How this deception actually operates

Let us not stop at bare condemnation, but show clearly the face of this error, so that the unknowing may recognize it when they meet it.

The “angel therapist” calls himself a “certified” practitioner — a certification given not by any spiritual authority, but by other practitioners of the same teaching, in a closed circle that feeds on itself. The session is paid for, like any commercial service, and follows a pattern nearly identical to fortune-telling of old, only with the tools changed: instead of tarot cards, “angel cards” (illustrated oracle decks, drawn at random and “interpreted” as personal messages); instead of incantation, “channeling” a message supposedly received from a being named by the practitioner — “Archangel so-and-so,” “the angel of healing,” “the angel of abundance” — names found nowhere in Scripture and serving no commandment of God, but rather the desires of the paying client: money, love, success, peace without the cross.

To this is added an entire pseudo-scientific apparatus meant to inspire confidence: “angel numbers” (repeated digits like 11:11 or 444, interpreted as signs), “energy clearing,” “chakra alignment” combined with angel names, “channeled messages” written automatically, as if the hand were guided by a foreign power. All of these are old techniques of divination and spiritism, merely reclothed in therapeutic language so as to appear self-care rather than the summoning of spirits.

And the doctrine behind the practice is as foreign to Truth as its methods: it teaches that man has no sin, only “energy blockages”; that angels are servants at anyone’s disposal, without being sent by God and without any worthiness required of the one who calls; that any soul, regardless of faith or manner of life, can “receive messages” merely by reciting a formula or purchasing a session. This is precisely the structure of the old witchcraft — payment, formula, a being summoned on command — only moved out of the village and into the “wellness” studio.

The first deception: summoning the unseen without the Church’s sending

The Holy Fathers teach us that not every spirit who appears or speaks is sent by God. Saint Anthony the Great, often tempted by spirits who appeared to him in luminous form and spoke words of comfort, left his followers the most useful law of the spiritual life: do not trust the appearance, do not trust the beautiful word, do not trust the feeling of false peace — but always ask: “Who are you, and whence do you come?” And if the spirit is troubled by the sign of the Cross or the invocation of the Name of Jesus, then the wolf is unmasked beneath the sheep’s clothing.

The Paterikon preserves the tale of a monk to whom, by night, a being of light appeared, claiming to be his guardian angel, demanding worship and full trust. The monk, unknowing, was ready to receive this as a gift. But his spiritual father, hearing the account, gave him a simple rule: “If it appears again, do not bow down, but ask it: are you of Christ? And make the sign of the Cross over it.” The monk did so, and the apparition vanished like smoke, proving itself deception.

“Angel therapy” knows nothing of this discernment. It invites man to summon, to “connect,” to “receive messages” from unnamed beings, subject to no spiritual judgment, without a priest, without a prayer of absolution, without fasting, without humility. It is the very image of the necromancy forbidden in the Law: “There shall not be found among you anyone who consults the dead or calls upon spirits” (Deuteronomy 18:10-11).

The second deception: worship of angels in place of Christ

The Apostle Paul clearly condemned those who “delight in false humility and worship of angels” (Colossians 2:18). True angels of God flee from worship — we know this from Revelation, where the angel stops John, saying: “See that you do not do that! […] Worship God!” (Revelation 19:10). And whoever gladly accepts being summoned as a service at man’s disposal is not an angel of God.

The third deception: comfort without repentance

The most cunning aspect of this modern error is that it offers comfort without the cross, healing without tears, peace without struggle against the passions — “you are fine just as you are,” it says, without any call to repentance. But true comfort always comes after the tears of repentance, never in its place. Saint John Climacus writes that demons often slip in under the guise of “comfort” precisely to lull the fear of God and the soul’s watchfulness to sleep.

What remains for us

For the one tempted by such a calling, there is no need for argument, but a simple step: to tell one’s spiritual father what was heard or felt, to open the Psalter and read a Psalm of repentance, to say the Jesus Prayer — “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner” — and to remember that one’s Guardian Angel needs no summoning through money and appointment — he watches unceasingly, without payment, from baptism onward.

“But if anyone preaches to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed!” (Galatians 1:9) — not as a curse cast upon the one who has wandered, but as a watch set over the Truth, lest we lose it because of a beautiful name borne by a foreign work.

A treia înșelăciune: mângâierea fără pocăință

Patience That Gives Birth to Peace

Not every trial comes to crush you; many come to reveal what is in your heart.

The impatient person wants everything to change immediately: people, circumstances, and even God’s work. But God works like rain that slowly soaks into the earth. What grows quickly withers quickly; what matures through patience takes deep root.

Patience is not weakness but the strength to remain steadfast when the soul is tempted to flee, complain, or despair. It does not always change circumstances, but it changes the one who endures them.

The one who endures with prayer begins to see that God is never late; He works at the right time. Grace does not hurry, because God’s love is never hurried. He first prepares the heart, and then He opens the doors.

Do not ask only for the trial to end. Ask that through it there may be born within you a peace that does not depend on circumstances.

“By your patience possess your souls.” (Luke 21:19)

(Luca 21:19)

The Unending Day

Introduction

For six days God worked, fashioning heaven and earth and all that is in them, and on the seventh day He rested from all His works (Gen. 2:2). Man was created on the sixth day, as though all creation had been prepared for his coming, just as a house is made ready for its master.

Yet the number of the days of creation does not end with seven. Enlightened by the Holy Spirit, the Church has also known an eighth day — a day not counted among the days of the week, but standing beyond them, as the boundary of the age to come. For on the first day of the week, which is also the eighth from the beginning of creation, Christ rose from the dead, breaking the bonds of death and opening to mankind the entrance into the everlasting age.

The Scriptural Foundation of the Number

Solomon said, “Give a portion to seven, and also to eight” (Eccl. 11:2), a word which the Fathers interpreted as a prophecy concerning the seven days of this present age and the eighth day of the age to come. David, in the titles of certain psalms, mentions “the eighth,” which the Holy Fathers understood as the day of the universal resurrection.

The Lord was crucified on the sixth day — Friday — rested bodily in the tomb on the seventh — the Sabbath — and rose on the first day of the following week, which is the eighth from the beginning of creation. Thus the day of the Lord’s Resurrection is the eighth day, the first day of the new age, beyond the cycle of fallen time.

Saint Basil the Great and the Mystery of the Unending Day

Saint Basil the Great, in his commentary on the Hexaemeron, pauses over the first day of creation and explains why Moses did not call it “the first day,” but “one day.” Moses wished to show that this day does not end with the others, but returns at the end of the ages as the eighth day, which is also the first of another world.

Saint Basil calls this day “the unending day, which has no evening and no succession of another day, the age that is without end and without decay.” The seven days of the week turn in an unbroken circle; the eighth day breaks out of this circle: no evening follows it, for it is the threshold of eternity.

For this reason, in many places baptisteries were built with eight sides, so that the one being baptized might enter, through the very shape of the building, into the mystery of the eighth day: dying with Christ in the water and rising with Him to new life, as an earnest of the universal resurrection to come.

Saint John Chrysostom: the Firstfruits of the Departed

Saint John Chrysostom explains the Apostle’s word: “Christ has risen from the dead, being the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Cor. 15:20). The firstfruits are not a different harvest, but the first part of the same harvest. So Christ’s Resurrection is not a separate victory, but the beginning of the very resurrection that will embrace all mankind.

Therefore the Church remembers the departed continually — in the Divine Liturgy, in memorial services, in almsgiving — for their path and ours is one and the same. Our prayer benefits them, and their intercession benefits us, for we are members of the same Body, which is not divided even by death.

The Three States: the Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Day

The Sixth Day — our present life

The sixth day is the image of our present life: toil, struggle, the bearing of the cross, and the waiting for the hour of departure.

The Seventh Day — the rest of souls in Paradise

The seventh day is the state of the souls of the righteous after death: true rest, real light, and genuine nearness to God, yet still without the fullness of union with the resurrected body. It is not an intermediate state of purification, but the perfected state of the soul, awaiting the perfection of the whole human being.

At death, the soul passes through the particular judgment, which reveals its state and assigns the place fitting to that state — light or darkness. It is not a temporary punishment nor a cleansing through time, but the soul’s entrance into its proper condition.

At the end of the ages will come the universal judgment, when all will rise with their bodies and the destiny of each — soul and body together — will be sealed forever.

The Eighth Day — the universal resurrection

The eighth day is the resurrection of all, when souls will be reunited with their bodies, glorified by the power of Christ. This day has not yet come for anyone except Christ, the firstfruits of the departed. It will come for all at once, “in a moment, at the last trumpet” (1 Cor. 15:52).

The Joy of the Saints and Their Intercession

The saints are not in an empty waiting, but in Paradise, in light and in the nearness of God. The Lord said to the thief: “Today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). They rejoice in God and intercede for us with great power, for they are alive before Him, according to the word: “God is not the God of the dead, but of the living” (Matt. 22:32).

Their joy is not diminished; it is simply awaiting its final crown — the union with the resurrected body at the end of the ages.

Why This Distinction Matters

Even the greatest saints have not yet received the fullness of the promise, but will receive it together with us, according to the Apostle: “That they should not be made perfect apart from us” (Heb. 11:39–40). The whole Church — in heaven and on earth — will enter together into the eighth day.

Therefore we pray for the departed, not as for strangers who have already reached the final harbor, but as for our brothers and sisters who await the same day we await.

Conclusion

We, the living, are still in the sixth day, bearing the cross of our labors. The departed rest in the seventh day, in the light of Paradise, interceding for us and awaiting the fullness of the resurrection. And the eighth day, the unending day, will dawn for all at once, when Christ comes in glory, and “so we shall always be with the Lord” (1 Thess. 4:17).

May their memory be eternal — and salvation to us all.

Ziua cea neînserată

Introducere

Outdated technology? / Tehnologie învechită?

Which outdated technology do you miss the most, and why?

Outdated technology?

Perhaps only if there were a place where time could stop.

But time does not stop; only the question returns, like a movement that has forgotten its beginning.

“The old” is not an era, but the mind’s desire to fix a point on a path without points.

“The new” is not an emergence, but a carefully arranged forgetting.

Between them lies a space without a name — because naming it would turn it into something it is not.

And yet: a corded telephone, heavy in the palm, ringing rarely in the long evenings.

Not the technology, but its weight; not the object, but the waiting for a voice.

The palm remembers what the mind cannot hold.

Perhaps technology does not exist as “old” or “new,” but only as the human attempt to define the present through what he no longer recognizes.

The rest is a movement that repeats without repeating,

until you realize you were never following technology, but your own attempt to understand it and somewhere, in the palm, a weight that no longer exists, yet the hand still searches for it.

A reply to Shakespeare, on “to be or not to be”

An elder, hearing the word of the wise man among the English who asked whether “to be or not to be” is the question, said: “The question is fair, but not complete, for one word is still lacking: to be what?”

And he added: “For it is not merely a matter of being or ceasing to be, but of being that which you were made to be, or remaining that which the passions and the forgetfulness of God have made of you. The man who fears only death has not yet understood the harder question — that he may be alive in body and dead in soul, walking like a shadow among shadows, never having arrived at his true self.”

He said again: “Hamlet feared ‘what dreams may come’ after the sleep of death, and in this he spoke as a man, not as a Christian. For we do not fear dreams, but await an awakening — and that awakening will show not whether we were or were not, but whom we resembled while we were: the image with which we were born, or the image the passions wove for us.”

And he concluded: “So the true question is not to be or not to be, but: to be yourself, united with Christ, or to be nothing but a shadow of yourself, estranged from it. This is the true death to fear — not the ceasing of breath, but the ceasing of likeness.”

The Vigil for the Departed — Theology and Meaning

Introduction

Death, to the mind of this world, is an end; to the mind of the Church, it is a passage. The one whom we call “fallen asleep” has not ceased to be, but has passed from the bodily state into the state of the soul, awaiting the day when body and soul shall be united again, at the common resurrection. For this reason the Church does not abandon the departed in silence, but keeps watch over him in prayer, just as the disciples kept watch by the tomb of the Lord, awaiting the third day.

The vigil is not mere custom, but confession of faith: that death does not have the final word, that the soul lives, and that the love between the living and the departed is not severed, but transformed into intercession.

Scriptural Foundations

Solomon says: “and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it” (Eccl. 12:7). Here is proof that man is not wholly dissolved, but only the body returns to that from which it was taken, while the soul, being immortal, goes before God.

The Apostle Paul, comforting those who mourn, writes: “we do not want you to be uninformed about those who have fallen asleep, that you may not grieve as others who have no hope” (1 Thess. 4:13). He does not forbid weeping, but forbids despair; for the grief of one who hopes in the resurrection differs from the grief of one who does not know Christ.

David, in turn, asks for his own soul: “Enter not into judgment with your servant” (Ps. 143:2), showing that the soul, after its separation from the body, stands before righteous judgment, and has need of mercy.

The Witness of the Holy Fathers

Saint John Chrysostom teaches that the living can bring benefit to the departed through prayer, through almsgiving, and above all through the Divine Liturgy, for love knows no boundary of death. He explains, interpreting the Apostle, that it was not in vain that the Apostles ordained the commemoration of the departed at the divine Mysteries, knowing that much profit and much help comes to them from this.

Saint Basil the Great, in his ordinances, shows that the Church prays for all who have fallen asleep in the true faith — not as though prayer could compel the judgment of God, but because His mercy receives the intercession of the living on behalf of those who can no longer pray for themselves.

Saint Ephrem the Syrian, lamenting over death, calls upon the living not to fear praying for the departed, for, he says, the soul has need of prayer just as an ailing body has need of medicine.

The Theological Meaning of the Vigil

Why does the Church keep watch over the departed, rather than entrusting him at once to the earth?

First, because death, for the Christian, is not extinction, but sleep — hence we call him “the one who has fallen asleep.” Just as one who sleeps is not abandoned by the household, but is watched over until awakening, so too the one who has fallen asleep in the Lord is watched over by the Church until the day of resurrection.

Second, the vigil is an image of the spiritual struggle the soul undergoes in the hours following its separation from the body. Knowing that the soul appears before the particular judgment, the Church keeps watch in prayer, asking for God’s mercy, just as the people of Israel kept watch and fasted for those in danger.

Third, the vigil is a confession of the communion that is not broken by death. The Body of Christ, the Church, embraces both the living and the departed alike; and just as the members of a body are not severed from one another by the sleep of one member, so too the departed are not severed from the communion of the living, but remain united through prayer and the hope of the resurrection.

The Order and Symbols of the Vigil

The reading of the Psalter beside the departed is no empty custom, but food given to the soul that has departed, for the words of David, full of repentance and hope, intercede for the one who can no longer speak for himself before God.

The candle lit beside the body confesses that the departed has not entered into darkness, but into the light of Christ, who said: “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). The incense, rising into the air, images the prayer that ascends to God for the soul of the departed, according to the word of the Psalmist: “Let my prayer be set forth as incense before You” (Ps. 141:2).

The all-night vigil, where the order permits it, is not only a mark of honor, but a struggle of the living alongside the departed, as though accompanying him on his final journey with unceasing prayer — as the disciples ought to have watched with Christ in Gethsemane, but fell asleep; the Church, however, does not sleep, but keeps watch.

The Benefit for the Living

The vigil brings benefit not only to the departed, but also to the living, for it turns them from the vanity of passing cares to the remembrance of death, which is the beginning of wisdom. He who keeps watch beside the lifeless body of his brother sees himself also in that mirror, and is humbled, and prays, and prepares himself for his own passing.

Conclusion

Thus, the vigil for the departed is a mystery of love and of faith: love, which is not quenched by the death of the body; faith, that the soul lives before God and awaits the day of the common resurrection. The Church keeps watch, prays, and sings — not for the one who no longer is, but for the one who lives in the Lord — showing all that death, for the faithful, is not an endless night, but a threshold to the unfading day of the Kingdom.

“He who believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live” (John 11:25).

Memory eternal!

Privegherea celui adormit — teologie și semnificații

Introducere

Semnificația teologică a privegherii

Labors in the Wind

Why do you desire so many and endless things, and labor in the wind, as Solomon says (Eccl. 5:15)? For your care shows itself to be foolish and without profit, since the reins of all things are held in the hand of God, and He guides and bears all things according to His will.

Behold the one who runs from morning until evening after advancement and elevation, thinking that through tireless labor he will establish his peace. One gathers wealth upon wealth, and houses upon houses; another chases the image he shows to the world, measuring his worth by those who watch him and by the praise given him. But the soul finds no rest either in gathering or in the praise of men, but only in Him who does not change and does not pass away.

Therefore, in vain you gather much, and in vain you strive to appear more than you are, for you do not know for whom you gather them, as David said (Ps. 38:10). A day will come, and you know not the hour, when all that was gathered — whether riches or renown — will pass into forgetting, and you will stand naked before Him who weighs not the deeds shown, but those hidden.

Do not fear, then, to leave the reins in the hand of God, for He cares for you better than you could care for yourself. Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and the rest will be added unto you. Then your labor will no longer be in the wind, but will bear fruit unto life everlasting.

EN

I don’t think the original question is wrong, just incomplete. “Who we are” isn’t a fixed given, like a stone that experiences merely strike and reveal. Who we are is partly formed through repeated choices, and choices happen inside experience, not outside it. Nature isn’t a hidden kernel waiting to be provoked; it’s something built, drop by drop, through how we respond, thousands of times, to small things.

What stays true either way: the response matters more than the event itself. How you react to an experience says more about you than the experience does.

From the Profitable Paterikon, concerning the seven deadly sins

An elder said:

“I saw a brother swollen like a bladder full of wind, and I asked him: what do you carry within you?

And he answered: I believe myself greater than other men.

And I said to him: this is pride, mother of all falls, which cast the shining angel down from heaven into darkness.

And I said again: the proud man sees no one, not even himself—therefore he falls without knowing from where.”

He said again:

“Another ate without ceasing, though his body was like a bottomless sack.

I asked him why he did not stop, and he said: I know not how to be filled.

This is gluttony of the belly, which kills the spirit through the flesh.

And I saw that it was not the food that devoured him, but he himself had become food for his own desire.”

And concerning lust a father said:

“This fire burns swifter than all others, for it enters through the eyes and through thought,

and he who guards not his senses is like a man who keeps a burning coal in his bosom and wonders that he is burned.

And I said also: he who is burned no longer knows where the wound is and where the fire is—and then he can flee from neither.”

Of avarice an elder said:

“He who gathers without measure is like a man drinking seawater—the more he drinks, the thirstier he becomes.

And I saw that silver did not serve him, but he served silver as a merciless master.”

And of envy an Abba said:

“I saw a brother wasting in the face, though he lacked for nothing.

I asked what illness he had, and he said: my brother’s good fortune pains me more than my own misfortune.

This is envy, which gnaws the bone as rot gnaws the wood.

And I said: envy is healed only by thanksgiving—for only he who gives thanks can behold the light in another without darkening himself.”

Of wrath an elder said:

“The wrathful man is like a house whose roof the wind has torn away—every rain enters and ruins it from within.

And I said: wrath does not strike the other first, but the one who bears it—for he tears off his own roof and wonders that the rain falls on him.”

And of sloth, most cunning of the demons, a father said:

“It comes at noonday and whispers to the monk that the day is long and his cell is narrow,

and it makes all the other brothers seem worthy of contempt,

and makes him grow slothful until he forgets why he came into the desert.

And I said: sloth does not strike, it unbinds—it unbinds the mind, unbinds the will, unbinds prayer, until nothing is left to be unbound.”

And the elder concluded, saying:

“All these are seven doors of death, but all open from a single threshold: forgetfulness of God.

He who remembers Him in every hour leaves no entrance for the enemy.

For the remembrance of God is like light: it does not chase away the darkness, it makes it cease to be.”

Zis-a iarăși:

(Iacov 4:6)

English

Humility does not mean considering yourself worthless; it means seeing yourself before God as you truly are.

The proud person constantly seeks to be noticed, praised, and justified. The humble person is not preoccupied with how he appears before others, but with the condition of his heart before God. He knows that every good thing comes from the Lord, and that without grace he can do nothing truly good.

Humility does not speak much about itself. It does not fiercely defend itself when treated unjustly, nor does it exalt itself when praised. It remains at peace because its hope rests in God, not in the judgment of people.

Where humility enters, peace begins to blossom. Quarrels diminish, anger weakens, and love finds room to grow. Humility does not diminish a person; it places him in the truth. And only in the truth can the grace of God work fully.

Do not seek to appear great. Seek instead to be faithful in small things, and God will quietly build the inner man.

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)

Omul în fața depresiei / Man Before Depression

ROMÂNĂ

Introducere

– psihoterapia urmărește reglarea;

• Filautia — auto‑centrări excesive; psihologic: izolare, ruminare.

• Acedia — apatie profundă; psihologic: anhedonie, lipsă de activare.

• Mândria cognitivă — rigiditate, hiper-control; psihologic: supra-reglare.

• Nerecunoștința — bias negativ; psihologic: atenție selectivă pe negativ.

• Neiertarea — blocaj afectiv; psihologic: ruminare, insight fără eliberare.

Introduction

Psychotherapy and patristic anthropology describe depression from different but complementary angles: one explains mechanisms, the other meaning. Together, they restore the whole person.

Patristic word:

“It is not enough to know what hurts; you must know why it hurts.”

The Ten Senses — academic perspective and the soul’s powers (St. John Damascene)

Academic perspective

Patristic anthropology speaks of five bodily senses and three powers of the soul:

• the rational power (logistikon),

• the irascible power (thymikon),

• the appetitive power (epithymetikon).

Bodily senses perceive form; the soul’s powers govern inner movement: thought, energy, desire.

In depression, reducing inner experience to emotion (“I feel empty”) may hide loss of meaning (“I no longer see direction”).

This model complements neurobiology with a phenomenological layer.

Patristic word

“When the mind darkens, the irascible is disturbed and desire scatters; man loses both meaning and path.”

Depression — affective dysregulation or rupture of meaning?

Academic perspective

Psychotherapy sees depression as affective dysregulation shaped by trauma, attachment, cognition, and neurochemistry.

Patristic anthropology sees it also as disorder of the soul’s three powers:

– the rational no longer sees meaning,

– the irascible loses strength,

– the appetitive no longer desires the good.

Patristic word

“Depression is not only the storm of emotion but the loss of the inner sky.

Therapy calms the wave; meaning shows the shore.”

The passions — academic explanation and patristic sharpness

Academic perspective

A “passion” can be translated as a persistent affective-cognitive pattern.

Depression may be fueled by self-focus, apathy, cognitive rigidity, negative bias, and affective blockage.

Patristic word

“Passions are hidden roots.

Psychology trims the branches; repentance cuts the root.”

Identity — academic and patristic

Academic perspective

Diagnosis is necessary but may lead to identity rigidity.

Traditional anthropology emphasizes dynamic identity.

Patristic word

“You are not the name of your illness.

You are image — deeper than the shadow.”

Conclusion

Academic perspective

Psychotherapy restores regulation; spiritual anthropology restores meaning.

Together they form a complementary model.

Patristic word

“Therapy is a step; meaning is the path.

Healing comes when man climbs the step and walks the path.”

Chipul, nu fiara / The Likeness, Not the Beast

If you had to be an animal for a week, which one would you be and why?

EN:

I’d choose not to choose — to be human is precisely the power to question a question that lowers me from my own likeness.

The beast isn’t something to choose. It’s only the mirror that rebukes me.

Paza inimii / Guarding the Heart

(Pildele 4:23)

English

A person carefully guards whatever he considers precious. He locks his house, protects his possessions, and watches over those he loves. Yet the greatest treasure is not outside him but within him: the heart.

From the heart flow thoughts, desires, words, and deeds. If the spring is troubled, the water cannot be clear. Therefore, the first battle is not against people or circumstances, but against the thoughts that seek entrance into the heart.

Not every thought that knocks at the door of the mind should be welcomed. Just as the watchman of a city asks every visitor who he is and where he comes from, so the soul must examine every thought before opening the gate of the heart.

A heart guarded through prayer becomes an altar of peace. There, the noise of the world loses its power, and the grace of God works quietly and without disturbance.

Do not seek first to change the world. Guard your heart, and the world within you will begin to be filled with light.

“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23)

A level-headed man / Om cu scaun la cap

English version — from the desert of the heart

A man with a steady mind does not sit on a chair, but in his heart. A settled mind is not a clever mind, but a mind that stopped running. Running breeds fear; settling breeds light. Philosophy calls it discernment, psychology calls it balance; the desert of the heart calls it the mind descending into the heart. Where the mind rests, the whole life becomes quiet.

Guilt of the Disposition

Do not defame God the all‑wise Creator of our members through your sin‑loving thoughts. For none of the human members is corrupt or worthy of condemnation. In the beginning, our forefathers Adam and Eve, while they were in Paradise, had the same bodily members, and they were not cast out because of their members, but because of the transgression of God’s commandment. Therefore, we must not defame our members, but the evil disposition that acts through them.

The Garment of the Heart Before God

Someone asked who might be the one of whom the Gospel says that he entered the banquet without having the proper garment (Mt. 22:11). Do not look outside yourself, but examine the depths of your heart, for all Christians have been called to the divine banquet. Therefore, if we enter filled with thoughts of love of silver, of love of fornication, or of envy, or other such things, it is evident that we have dared to stand at the joyful and spotless banquet clothed in a foreign garment. But if we change our judgment, which is worthy of condemnation, and clothe our mind with thoughts of spiritual mercy and almsgiving, of goodness and pure love, of gentleness and humble discernment, and with those similar to them, it is clear that we will also clothe ourselves with the garments worthy of the wedding. Let us hasten, therefore, to clothe ourselves with the saving garment of the spiritual wedding. For it depends on us to clothe ourselves and to unclothe ourselves, and to change our garments, sometimes for good, sometimes for evil, and to prefer now one, and later another; and this because man was created with a self‑governing will.

Taina tăcerii / The Mystery of Silence

(Isaia 30:15)

English

Not every silence is a virtue, yet every virtue grows in silence.

A tree makes no noise as it sinks its roots into the earth. Likewise, the soul is not strengthened by many words, but by the hidden work of the heart. God often speaks where a person ceases to justify himself, to complain, and to scatter his mind.

The one who loves silence does not flee from people but from distraction. He is silent not because he has nothing to say, but because he desires to preserve within himself the presence of God. There are words that bring light and words that bring darkness; yet silence guarded by prayer enlightens more than many wise speeches.

If you learn to be silent before people, you will begin to hear the whisper of your conscience. And if you become silent before God, you will hear the voice of grace.

Do not seek to fill every moment with words. Leave room for your heart to encounter the One who dwells in its depths.

“In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and trust shall be your strength.” (Isaiah 30:15)

I love You essentially

Brother, a man does not say “I love You” from the heart, but from his being, for the heart changes, trembles, burns, and cools, but the being stands before God like a child who knows nothing, yet feels that he is held.

Love spoken in calm is beautiful, but love spoken after inner unveiling is true, for when a man sees the wildness within, the misery, the passion, and still says, “I love You, Lord,” that word does not rise from him, but from the place where God sustains his very being.

Remember this: not the one who feels much loves, but the one who remains in truth after being uncovered. For essential love is neither emotion nor strength, but the humble answer of a man who has seen how little he is and how greatly God carries him.

Grey Matter

Brother, know this: grey matter is not just tissue hidden inside the skull, but the place where understanding catches fire.

The mind is not measured by size, but by how much truth it can carry without breaking.

A man rich in grey matter does not speak quickly — he sees clearly.

He does not burn with impulse — he lays each thought like a foundation stone.

And remember: grey matter is not counted in grams, but in silences that give birth to discernment.

An elder once said:

“The wide mind is easily shaken; the deep mind stays still and sees.”

Omul lăuntric / The Inner Man

— Proverbele 4:23

English

People often seek to change the world around them, yet forget that every true change begins in the heart. If the spring is pure, the water will also be pure; and when the heart is enlightened through prayer, one’s deeds will also bear light. Do not first ask what others are like; ask instead what you are like before God. Whoever guards the inner man is not shaken by the noise of the world, for in the secret place of the heart he finds a peace that no one can take away. At the beginning of each day, bring your mind into your heart and ask God not to change your circumstances, but to renew your soul. There true life begins.

Verse of the day

„Guard your heart above all else, for from it flow the springs of life.” – Proverbs 4:23

Obedience is the gate through which wisdom enters.

When you stop listening, your heart becomes full of itself, and empty of God.

Stay open. Stay obedient. Stay ready to be shaped.

“Son, the one who listens is saved faster than the one who learns from himself.”

Obedience is not weakness, but the power to receive.

It is not blind submission, but watchfulness, to let the good word cut you where it is needed and heal you where there is a wound.

The Deception of the Demon of Fornication

Something else is the love that is according to God, and something else is the beastly and irrational love of the world and of the flesh. The baseness shown by the cunning and utterly impure demon is evident to me, the demon who lies in ambush, hastening to settle himself in the souls that are virtuous and love God. The spirit of fornication, which young people usually call eros, openly and suddenly draws into the abyss of debauchery those who are inclined toward pleasure, who disregard the future judgments and the final tribunal valid for all mankind, and he does this without effort. But for those who care for their salvation and fight against the beasts of pleasure and bodily delight, he uses certain baits, tricks, and deceits. At first, it seems that nothing is harmful, and that it is merely natural love and affection toward a person, known or unknown, male or female, a love that does not require special attention. After this, the devil urges them to converse, to live together, to travel together, to become friends, to go on vacations together, to share necessary things and celebrate together, to court one another and to eat together, without necessarily having thoughts of fornication. Yet all these become grounds, foundations, beginnings, and roots of sin. With the passing of time, after the evil habit becomes difficult to remove, the demon, approaching unexpectedly the genital parts, suddenly kindles fire upon the body and boils its members like brass in a cauldron, and he goads him, shooting his heart with the fiery arrows of unlawful pleasure, toward the wicked deed, burning him just as fiercely as the fiery furnace of Babylon once burned. Therefore, many times the soul, when exhausted, grows numb and weak in its spiritual powers because of bodily ticklings, and needs to cry out with the words of Scripture: “They surrounded me, and they were inflamed like a fire among thorns” (Ps. 117:11–12). For through the burning of the body and through unseemly movements, the evil demons lavishly pour the venom of the unclean serpent upon my inner parts, and thus we must say with the psalmist: “My loins are filled with mockings” (Ps. 37:7). For behold, the power of the evil one has worked upon my middle: “I was afflicted and greatly humbled” (Ps. 37:8), surrounded all around with the wall of shame. And how can I, then, pass over this wall? “The demons prepared a snare for my feet, and they pressed down my soul” (Ps. 56:8). Darkness is in my eyes, because I wished not to see. Harmful blindness, therefore, is fornication, and, to speak briefly, all knowledge and desire that belongs to the flesh. I am caught like a lion going to slaughter, and I am brought like a dog in its chain and like a bird fallen into a trap, and I suffer the great burning of impurity. Who, then, will pray for me to the Master and Lover of mankind, God, to come and help me, to take me by the hand, just as He once touched Peter’s mother‑in‑law, so that the temptation may depart from me and the passionate, frightening, and shameless love may leave me, that I may rise again to the temperate life and serve the Lord with discernment? Guard yourself and flee, as much as you can, from this flattering and cunning demon, and do not let yourself be overcome; do not look at him, lest through your gates (Jer. 9:21), that is, through your eyes, as the prophet says, the death of sin be kindled in your soul. Instead, looking down toward the earth, answer him with a fierce gaze and a harsh face, and do not accept to laugh. For we must conquer the strongholds of the evil one and perceive the schemes of the unclean serpent before we are caught by his many baits and the snares of desire. And because the foundation of the bodily deed is the soul’s disposition that loves the flesh, before it goes outward and the evil sprouts and makes branches, remove it from the root, so that you may not be forced to use the mattock and fire, needing much help to destroy the tree of fornication. For many times the root that remained in one place has torn down even a very well‑built wall, or has split the hard stone. Flee, then, from the deceitful bait of corruption and free yourself from the snares of the devil, crushing his traps and arming yourself all around with fasting, with frequent prayer, with the bending of knees, with bodily toil, with the practices of righteousness, and with many other testimonies and helpful deeds. Then chant together with blessed David to our most‑high Savior and Benefactor, Christ, saying: “Protect me from the snare they have set for me and from the stumbling blocks of those who work lawlessness” (Ps. 140:9). Remember also the commandments of the Gospel: “Let your loins be girded with all wisdom, and let the lamps of your mind be burning, and be like men who wait for their Lord when He will come from heaven, and He will find watching those who truly honor and love Him, to make them shine like the sun in His heavenly Kingdom” (Lk. 12:35–36). Know also this: the enemy does not tempt someone only through those who are pleasing in appearance, but he also breathes into the soul a blind love even toward the faces of the ugly and unpleasant, women and men. For this demon, friend of impurity, is a searcher of evils and reveals himself in many forms, and often tries, in various ways, to catch us in the snare through unlawful and shameless desire. Flee, therefore, from companionship with impure youths, both with those who are attractive and with those who are unpleasant in appearance. But when, with time, you feel and understand that you are troubled by this corrupt passion of fornication, which drags your soul toward darkness and impurity, think that your mind is King Saul, who was possessed by the wicked spirit of passionate love, and bringing before you the book of David, charm your heart that is seized by the devil, calming it with the words of the Holy Spirit, and lift up to the Lord a song of psalms: “Protect me from the snare they have set for me, from the stumbling blocks of those who work lawlessness” (Ps. 140:9), and “Deliver me from the hand of my enemies who persecute me” (Ps. 30:15). And the demon, frightened and disgusted by the divine words and by the very beneficial chanting of the psalms, will depart from you in shame; and you will rise from the pit of misery through divine grace and will feel how an unknown air of purity and an unpassionate and clean state, unmixed and very joyful, like a clear and starry sky, will suddenly appear from the foggy and dark night, as if saying to you: “This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Ps. 117:24). “Open to me, therefore, you angels of God, the gates of righteousness” (Ps. 117:19), that I may enter through them. “I will confess to You, for You have heard me and have become my salvation. Blessed is God, Who has not rejected my prayer, nor has He turned His mercy away from me” (Ps. 65:19).

What’s one habit that has improved your life the most?

English

The habit that has shaped my life the most is this: not letting a single day pass without a small step toward the good, even when I feel nothing.

A kind thought, a short prayer, a quiet pause, small things, yet they keep the heart awake.

In these small steps the person gathers himself, calm settles, the mind clears, and a quiet light rises, the kind that makes no noise, yet carries the whole day.

Inner Watchfulness

The turmoil of today’s man, the scattered attention, the reflex of checking the phone, the mind jumping from one thing to another.

The inner man does not fall through great failures, but through the small inattentions he calls “little nothings.”
When the heart becomes accustomed to dispersion, it no longer sees what wounds it nor what heals it.

Watchfulness begins with one simple thing: to see where you are before you run toward where you think you should be.

Inner question:
What “little nothing” stole your attention in the past hours, and what remained of you afterward?

Patience in Everyday Life

Brother, the lack of patience is not a small weakness, but a wound that deepens day by day. The modern man does not fall because of great sins, but because of haste, a haste that tears his heart piece by piece. Patience is not a psychological exercise, but the place where the soul does not break. When you do not endure, you do not lose only a moment, you lose your very face. When you react without measure, you do not wound only another you disturb your own heart, and when you ignite quickly, you do not burn only a situation you burn the peace Christ places within you. The modern man lives under pressure: noise, fatigue, small injustices, hurried people. There patience is revealed, in the moment when you could respond, but choose to remain whole, in the moment when you could judge, but choose to truly see, in the moment when you could lose yourself, but choose to stay with Christ. The lack of patience is not just a mistake it is a loss. Patience is not just a virtue it is your daily salvation. When you endure, you do not become “better,” but more true, more present, more alive in Christ. Patience is the place where the modern man keeps his soul. Without it, everything becomes reaction. With it, everything becomes a path. And know this: the measure of your patience is not seen in how much you endure, but in how much you remain with Christ when everything pushes you to lose yourself.

What’s a chapter of your life you’d title „The Hard Years” — and what got you through it?

The Hard Years and the God who carried me

The chapter of my life I call The Hard Years was the time when I kept moving forward without strength, without clarity, without any light of my own, but I was not without God, my life was never in myself; it was always in Him. What carried me through? Not willpower, not optimism, not plans. It was His presence, sometimes felt, sometimes only believed. A short honest prayer, a moment of silence in the middle of noise, a single upward glance. In these small things, God kept my heart alive. I did not overcome the hard years through my own strength, but through His. That is why I say: The Hard Years were hard, but my life was in God and that is why I did not fall.

The Deception of the Demons

Since God has prevented the doing of evil, and sends those who commit it into the fiery Gehenna, how could it be possible for Him to work together with those who perform shameful deeds? Therefore, do not say that God hears the unclean, the sinful, and those corrupted in their habits, and that He kills people. May it never be so! These are not works of God, but evil deeds of cunning demons. For there are certain sorcerers who fashion an icon of some saints, and on the back of the icon they unusually place figures of mythological monsters, which they cover with earth. And when they desire either that a woman commit adultery, or that a man be killed, or that horses be crushed, then they fast a cursed and defiled fast, and make prayers through the whole night before the icon, and light candles and torches, and keep vigil invoking the demons until such a thing happens to appear. And they use such things to establish their craft, even though most of the time they accomplish nothing. Therefore, guard yourself from such people, lest someday you be drawn into their snare.

The Spirit of Blasphemy

The spirit of blasphemy, which very often disturbs our heart that loves God and is good, should not frighten us in any way. Instead, we must stand against it, striking it with prayers and good deeds, helping those who suffer and showing a generous heart, a humble mind, and kindness toward those near you. For these things, and others like them, can drive away from your soul the deceitful demon who dares to provoke you with wild and improper thoughts directed against yourself, against God, against creatures, against the saints, and against the divine mysteries.

Duhul Blasfemiei

What’s a book you think deserves a sequel?

The People of the Cave

Consider that this corruptible world is a cave. Here the righteous live like earthly angels, while the deceitful live like reptiles nested in this so‑called cave, committing very many injustices and causing very many sufferings to the blessed men. If, therefore, through their coexistence, and through the patience and counsel of the righteous, the animal‑like people should ever be transformed into human way of life, congratulations to them. But if they remain uncorrected until their death, they will suffer a twofold punishment in the future. One punishment because, instead of virtue, they embraced evil, and another because neither through their coexistence with the righteous nor through their counsel did they wish to become better.

The Light of Gentleness

About the false prophets, the Evangelist Luke writes: “Immediately a mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking someone to lead him by the hand” (Acts 13:11). But you, take heed, lest somehow, because of anger, you find yourself on the side of darkness and with a clouded mind, and thus come to need divine teachers to lead you by the hand from anger to the gentleness and mercy that enlighten the mind.

Let us compel Christ to remain with us

Christ rejoices when we compel Him to remain with us (Lc. 24:29). Since the light of virtue has set from us, let us persuade Him, like Cleopas, to remain with us, and, lodging together with our smallness and humility, to break the divine bread and give it for the communion of our soul. For there is nothing more constraining than prayer, which often compels even time itself to change. And since prayer is all‑powerful and invincible, the devil takes care to hinder us through very unpleasant and burdensome temptations, so that, being of no benefit to us in any way, we may neglect this weapon so useful and saving the prayer that is in Christ.

Wildness

Wildness, in the general sense of the word, can be considered the passion of pleasure, and the various forms of pleasures that have mingled into the life of human beings through the senses seem to be the scales around the body of the serpent, notched like stigmata according to the diverse multitude of passions. If you want to avoid dwelling together with the rational serpent, guard yourself from its head, that is, from the first attack of evil.

Good Deed

As long as someone is concerned with fulfilling good deeds, he will be troubled because of many things, whether by the wicked spirits opposed to him or by unjust people. Yet God allows the righteous one to be tormented by many, giving him occasions for acquiring the eternal and unending glory that is granted after suffering great afflictions. When the righteous one, not understanding, says to God: Why, O my Master, are all those who trouble me stronger than I am? (Ps. 3:1–2) Why, my Master, do You stand far away and look upon how I suffer thousands of sorrows and how I am tested? Why am I struck every day of the misery of my life? And while the righteous one says these things and others like them, God answers him, He who said to the prophet: If you still speak, behold, I have come (Is. 58:9). Thus He addresses His faithful servant, who has his face turned toward Him, and says: For this reason I have allowed you for a long time to be upset and plunged into troubles, in order to prepare for you a great and eternal crown. Therefore many things are said and happen to the righteous concerning afflictions (Ps. 33:18).

Patience

Patience according to God is a great help in times of temptation. For the Lord says: By your patience you will gain your souls (Lc. 21:19). He did not say: “by your fasting” or “by your stillness” or “by your psalmody,” even though all these are connected to the salvation of the soul, but by your patience. By patience, that is, through any temptation that may come and through any distress, whether it be words of insult, humiliation, or contempt from any person, whether small or great, and even through bodily illness or warfare from the satanic hosts, or through any kind of temptation, from men or from demons. By your patience you will gain your souls. Not simply by patience, but also by all thanksgiving, by prayer and humility, so that in this way you may bless and raise hymns to the Savior and Benefactor of all, God, Who arranges and accomplishes all things whether they are good or of another kind for our benefit. And the Apostle writes: By patience we pass through the struggle of faith that lies before us (Heb. 12:1). For what can be greater than virtue? And what is stronger or more powerful than patience understanding patience according to God, the queen of virtues, the foundation of courageous deeds, patience the harbor that is never storm‑tossed? For patience is truly peace in wars, calm in storms, and assurance in battles and dangers. It makes the one who has acquired it stronger than diamond, and neither weapons, nor flying arrows, nor agitated armies, nor battle devices, nor darts, nor spears that are hurled, nor the armies of demons, nor the arms of the enemy devils, nor even the devil himself, opposing with his entire host and with all his means of warfare, will be able to harm the one who has acquired it through the power of Christ.

Revenge

Moses, through prayer and the lifting up of his hands, drove back Amalek (Exodus 17:11). So too, if you harbor no desire for revenge against your brother and pray for the one who grieves and afflicts you, it is evident that you lift up your hands to heaven and receive every help in due time during temptation and the trials brought by the devil. But if you do not guard yourself against anger toward your neighbor, and you humiliate him, condemn him, and speak evil of him, then you are not lifting up the hands of the inner man of the soul. Even if outwardly you stretch out your hands and raise your eyes toward God, your prayer is not heard; for, as the Lord says, “your hands are full of your brother’s blood.” For what can be more deadly to the soul than resentment? Let us, therefore, be persuaded by Him who says: Wash yourselves through repentance, and cleanse yourselves from your wicked deeds through pure prayers.

Leprosy of the Soul

Let us flee from the desire to please men and from anger. For the Law of old has said that these are like the white and red forms of leprosy (Lev. 13:1). Let us also remove from ourselves treacherous hypocrisy and foolish cowardice, for these are like the azure form of leprosy. And let us further cast away irrational sadness and envy, which drain the soul, for these are like the yellow-green form of leprosy.

Lepra sufletului

Original

“Original minds are distinguished not by being the first to see a new thing, but by seeing the old, well-known thing, which is seen and overlooked by everyone, as something new. The first discoverer is usually that quite ordinary and unintellectual visionary—chance.” — Nietzsche

An Elder said: My child, do not run after new things, for the enemy loves the mind that wanders from one novelty to another, making it a stranger to God. Sit patiently beside the word of the Lord, and do not be quick to say, ‘I already know this.’ For the tongue knows many things, but the heart understands few. The humble man reads the same Gospel a hundred times, and each time he finds life in it—not because the Scriptures have changed, but because God has renewed the eyes of his soul. The water of the spring is the same, yet the thirsty man tastes it differently from the one who is full. So it is with the truth: it is not the truth that is made new, but the man who is renewed by grace, and thus begins to see what until then he had looked at without truly seeing. Do not seek great revelations, but a pure heart; for to the humble, God makes known the depth of those things which the proud pass by without noticing.”

A Parallel with Nietzsche

Nietzsche makes a true observation on the human level: the truly original person is not the one who constantly invents something new, but the one who sees in a new way what has always been before everyone’s eyes, yet was ignored.

The Desert Fathers, however, go a step further. They would say that this new way of seeing does not arise from the originality of the mind, but from the purification of the heart. It is not genius that enables a person to perceive the depth of truth, but the grace of God.

Therefore, for the Holy Fathers, the newness is not in the truth, for truth is eternal and unchanging, but in the person who repents. The same word of the Gospel, the same prayer, the same Divine Liturgy, the same commandments become, through the working of divine grace, ever new to the one who humbles himself.

At this point, Nietzsche’s observation may be regarded as a psychological insight, for man is indeed capable of rediscovering what has always been before him. Orthodoxy, however, gives this insight a different foundation: it is not originality that is the source of this rediscovery, but grace united with humility. Thus, what Nietzsche attributes to an exceptional mind, the Holy Fathers attribute to a purified heart. This is where the two perspectives ultimately part ways.

Original

Original.

Wit. Wit is the epitaph of an emotion. Nietzsche

Nietzsche, in the phrase “Wit is the epitaph of an emotion,” suggests a specific tension in his thinking: the transition from the immediate lived experience of emotion to a form of intelligence that “consumes” it and neutralizes it.

What Nietzsche says, briefly and precisely: He observes that when an emotion is transformed into “wit” (spirit, irony, verbal intelligence, refined sarcasm), it is no longer lived, but is processed mentally, aestheticized or ironized, and thus becomes “dead” as a living experience. Hence the powerful image: “wit is the epitaph of emotion” = the intellect writes an “epitaph” over lived experience, ending it, fixing it, turning it into an object.

Comparison with the patristic perspective and the fundamental difference

In Nietzsche, the mind (intelligence, spirit) rises above emotion. Emotion is “consumed” and transformed into form, the result being distance, lucidity, sometimes a cooling of lived experience, since it emphasizes intellect as a force of disenchantment of experience.

Teaching of the Holy Fathers

The problem is not the transformation of emotion, but the rupture from grace, because the mind must not “kill” the heart, but purify it, and emotion is not eliminated but healed and transfigured, emphasizing the union of mind and heart in the Holy Spirit.

Essential contrast: in Nietzsche, intellect can “bury” emotion in form (wit), whereas in the Holy Fathers’ tradition, grace transforms emotion into pure life. In Nietzsche, “wit” is a mechanism of distancing and closure of emotion, whereas in the patristic tradition, the mind is not called to bury the heart, but to become illumined through humility and prayer.

“A certain elder said: Do not make your mind a tombstone for the heart, for where judgment without grace rules, there love is buried alive. And where humility comes, there thought becomes light.”

The elders said: “It is not man’s wisdom to turn feeling into cold and dry words, nor to bury the movement of the heart under the judgment of the mind, for just as the tomb covers the body and hides it, so also proud speech covers the heart and deprives it of life; and he who cuts off his feeling through the pride of the mind remains poor of grace, but he who keeps his heart in humility receives enlightenment and life in the Spirit.”

„Spiritul este epitaful unei emoții.” Nietzsche

THE LIFE OF SAINT DIONYSIUS EXIGUUS

„He who asks seeks the truth. He who listens with patience finds salvation.”

He was born around the year 470 AD in Scythia Minor, which is our modern-day Dobrogea, near the Danube; that is why chroniclers call him „Dionysius the Scythian”. He was of Gothic descent, but with the heart of a Romanian and the faith of an Orthodox Christian. Being young and seeing the vanity of the world, he left his parental home and came to Rome, „the Old City”, not for bread, but for Christ. There, he was tonsured a monk and entered into obedience at a monastery. He was not talkative, nor was he an aspirant for high positions; that is why he gave himself the name „Exiguus”, „the Small, the Insignificant, the Worthless” and when he wrote, he would sign like this, „Dionysius, the small and unworthy monk”. His obedience was this: by day, he translated the Canons of the Holy Fathers and the Lives of the Saints from Greek into Latin, so that the Latins could also understand the order of the Eastern Church; by night, he kept vigil over the Psalms and copied manuscripts, so that the words of the Fathers would not be lost. Pope Gelasius, Pope Anastasius, and Pope Hormisdas honored him for his scholarly knowledge, but he fled from glory as from fire, saying: „I only know how to count the days and weep for my sins.” Because he was gentle and a lover of order, the Pope called him to a great obedience: „Brother Dionysius, make us new tables for Pascha, because the old ones based on Diocletian are no longer good, and the Latins are going astray during the feast.” And he, with fear, accepted. For 7 years, he worked on the „95-year Paschal Cycle”. He fell asleep in the Lord around the year 550, at a very advanced age, in peace and poverty, just as he had lived. The Orthodox Church commemorates him on September 1st, at the beginning of the ecclesiastical year, because he set a new beginning for the counting of years, shifting the center from the persecutor to Christ; some also commemorate him on November 21st. The hymns call him: „Model of humility, reformer of times, honor of Scythia, and praise of Rome”.

HOW HE CALCULATED THE YEARS

My son, he did not study astronomy like the Greeks, but he calculated with Christ in mind, and here is his method:

Step 1: He discarded „Anno Diocletiani”. Until his time, everyone counted „the year 241 since Diocletian”, but Diocletian was a persecutor. In the period 303–311, he issued 4 edicts, burned the Scriptures, and killed thousands of martyrs. And the elder said with tears: „How can I record the date in the registry after the one who shed the blood of saints? It is a blasphemy; it is like counting the years after Herod, the one who killed the infants.”

Step 2: He searched for the „Year of the Incarnation”. He took the Gospel according to Luke: „Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age” Luke 3:23. He took the chronicles of Eusebius of Caesarea, which linked the years of the Roman emperors with the years of Christ’s reign. He took the Canons of Nicaea (325), which stated when Pascha falls, and calculated backward. If Christ suffered around the years 29–30 and began His preaching at 30 years of age, then His birth was around the year 1. He erred by 4 to 6 years compared to today’s calculations, today we know that Herod the Great died in the year 4 BC, but he did not err in spirit; he wanted to make Year 1 equal to Christ, not to Diocletian.

Step 3: He made the tables: He wrote the „Tables of Dionysian Paschal Cycles” for 95 years, starting with „the year 532 from Christ”, and above it, he wrote in large letters: „Anno Domini Nostri Jesu Christi”, „In the year of our Lord Jesus Christ”. This is how the abbreviation AD, which you write today, was born: 2026 AD = 2026 from the Lord. He did not say „I know the exact day of His birth”, but he said „let us place Christ at the center, so that we no longer mention the persecutor.” For „Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” — Hebrews 13:8.

GRADUAL ACCEPTANCE

My son, the truth moves slowly, like the oil in a vigil lamp; it did not catch fire from the very first day. Here is how it happened:

6th–7th Century (Rome and Scythia): At first, the Romans accepted it because the Pope had ordered it, and the monasteries were copying his tables. However, in Spain and Gaul, people were still writing „after Diocletian”.

8th Century (Bede the Venerable): In the year 731, the English monk Bede, a learned man, wrote the „Ecclesiastical History of the English People”, and he used Dionysius’s „Anno Domini” throughout the entire book. Through him, this dating method took wing across all of England.

9th–10th Century (Charlemagne): The Emperor of the Franks, Charlemagne, ordered his chancelleries to write official documents using „AD”. From the emperor to the people, that is how order is established.

11th–15th Century (All of Europe): Slowly but surely, Venice, Florence, Germany, and Poland abandoned „after Diocletian” and wrote „from Christ”. However, Russia and the Romanian Principalities kept „Anno Mundi 5508” until much later—until Peter the Great in 1700—because we counted from the Creation of the World, according to the Septuagint.

Today, my son, the whole world, both Christian and pagan, writes 2026. This is not because everyone believes in Christ, but because a humble elder shifted the axis of history, and thus the word was fulfilled: „And from Me laws will go forth, and My judgment will be a light to the nations” — Isaiah 51:4.

Abba Dorotheos said: „It is not the greatness of the deed that is weighed by God, but the greatness of humility.” Saint Dionysius the Little changed how the world counts millennia; that is why we celebrate him on September 1st, at the beginning of the year, to remind ourselves that every beginning is made with Christ, not with fear. Today, 7534 from the creation — 2026. Amen.

CUM A CALCULAT ANII

Amin

The Unseen Gate

Brother, know that the man who does not expect the consequences of his own deeds is not merely unprepared, he is already wounded, for such unknowing is not a lack of information but a lack of watchfulness. In the desert of the heart, where thoughts speak louder than the voices of men, I have understood that evil does not seek a particular person, but seeks the crack, and the one who does not assume the outcomes of his life becomes himself a crack within his own being. Thus evil finds him easily, not because it pursues him, but because he does not hide himself in truth. For the man who does not receive the consequence of his deed is like one who throws a stone into the water and wonders why waves rise. But the waves are not punishment, they are echo, and the echo does not come from outside, but from his own depths. Brother, do not be deceived: freedom without consequences is not freedom but dizziness, and this dizziness makes a man an easy prey for any foreign thought, for any fear, for any evil that passes through the world like a cold wind. He who does not expect consequences lives in an imaginary world, and the imaginary world is the place where evil works most easily, for evil has no power over reality, only over illusions. Therefore, assumption is not a burden but a shield, an awakening, and a strengthening of the heart. When a man says, “This is my deed, and this is its outcome,” then evil has no place through which to enter, for truth, no matter how much it hurts, is a wall, and flight, no matter how much it seems to ease, is a fracture.

“He who does not receive the outcome of his deed will receive the outcome of his fear.” Amen.

Amin

A Word to the Romanian People, in the Time of the Congress of the Erring Ones that Has Filled Bucharest with Jehovah’s Witnesses 20-06-2026

Brothers, this word that follows is not against people, but against deception and our own negligence.

Brothers, listen, for the times no longer endure gentle words. Bucharest has been filled with delusion, with the congress of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and not only they are the great danger, but your own sleep, you who were baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Do not be surprised that deception walks freely through the capital; be surprised that you, the sons of Orthodoxy, have allowed the candle to go out, for where the light of Christ does not burn, any shadow enters. Christ, the Son of God, does not change. He is the Truth, not an opinion; He is the Way, not an alternative; He is the Life, not an interpretation. And whoever seeks Him outside the Church seeks water in the desert. Know that not all who speak His Name also follow Him. The true Christ is the One preached by the Holy Apostles, guarded by the Ecumenical Councils, lived by the Holy Fathers; and whoever departs from this order departs from the Truth.

The Mother of God is not a detail, but the mother of the Christian people; and whoever rejects Her rejects Her Son. Whoever does not honor Her cannot have peace. She is the shield of the Romanians, the protection of the nation, the guardian of the humble. Brothers, hold fast to the Mother of God, for deception flees from Her as smoke flees from the wind.

The Holy Apostles did not preach two Gospels, but one. The Holy Fathers did not guard two faiths, but one. They did not change the Truth according to the times, but remained steadfast until death. Whoever comes today with another Gospel, with another teaching, with another Christ, is not sent by God. Do not receive foreign teachings, even if they come with a smile, with politeness, with the Holy Scripture in hand. Holy Scripture without the Church is a sword in the hand of a child.

Romanians, have you forgotten the Divine Liturgy? Have you forgotten confession? Have you forgotten prayer? Have you forgotten fasting? Have you forgotten humility? Have you forgotten that you are children of Christ, not spiritual tourists? And now you wonder that deception knocks at your door? Where there is no light, darkness enters; where there is no vigilance, delusion enters; where Christ is not present, any foreign voice enters. And to you who lead the cities and the country, I speak with severity: You will give account before Christ — not because you allowed foreigners to come, for each person has his freedom — but because you left the people without protection, without catechesis, without light, without true shepherds. You opened the gates without discernment; you turned the capital into a marketplace of ideas, not a fortress of faith; and you forgot that the soul of a nation is more precious than all your projects. When the shepherds sleep, the wolves enter; when the leaders do not keep watch, the people go astray — and for this you will answer. And to you, young people, I speak with pain: You are the most hunted, for deception comes to you with a smile, with promises, with “new truths,” with “modern spirituality.” Do not let your minds be stolen. Not everything new is true, and not everything that shines is light. Hold fast to Christ, to the Mother of God, to the Church. Hold fast to the Holy Fathers, to the Holy Apostles, for there is power, there is peace, and there is the Truth.

Brothers, awaken. Judge no one, but guard your soul. Hate no one, but do not receive deception. Quarrel with no one, but do not abandon the Holy Orthodox Faith. Hold fast to the Cross, hold fast to the Mother of God, hold fast to the Holy Apostles, hold fast to the Holy Fathers, and hold fast to the Holy Orthodox Church, for there is life, there is peace, there is the Truth. Romanians, awaken — the time is short and the deception is great. If you guard the faith, God will guard the country; and if you abandon it, God allows the trial.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Light of the world and unchanging Truth, look upon us, the unworthy, who have grown weak in faith and have allowed deception to walk through our cities. Strengthen us with the power of Your Cross, that we may not be shaken by any foreign teaching. Most Holy Mother of God, Mother of Light and Protectress of our nation, cover us with your holy veil and drive away from us all delusion, all confusion, all deceit of the evil one. Strengthen our hearts in humility, vigilance, and love of Truth. Holy Apostles, who preached to the world the one and true Gospel, pray for us, that we may not turn to the right or to the left, but remain in the teaching you sealed with your blood. Holy Fathers, pillars of Orthodoxy, guardians of the dogmas and enlighteners of the world, strengthen our minds, inflame our hearts, awaken our conscience, that we may not receive any word that does not come from the Holy Spirit. Lord, protect the youth of this nation, for they are the most hunted by deception. Plant in them the desire for purity, for truth, for prayer, for the Church. Guard them from deceitful voices, from false light, from the feigned smile of those who do not know You. Lord, enlighten the leaders of the country, that they may understand that the soul of the people is more precious than all their plans. Give them fear of You, wisdom, and vigilance, that they may not leave the flock without shepherds and the city without protection. Lord, have mercy on the Romanian people, who were baptized in Your Name and lived for centuries under Your protection. Raise us from sleep, strengthen us in faith, inflame our hearts, that we may not be lost in the waves of the times, but remain anchored in Your holy Church. Lord Jesus Christ, do not let us fall into deception, do not let us depart from the Truth, do not let us lose our souls through carelessness and indifference. Keep us close to You, to Your Cross, to Your Mother, to Your Saints, for You are the Light of the world, the eternal Truth, and the Life without end, and to You we give glory, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
